TITLE: SPORTS / COMMUNITY REPORTER

STATUS: REGULAR, FULL-TIME
LOCATION: WELLPINIT, WA
SALARY / GRADE: $20.00 / PER HOUR

JOB SUMMARY: Sports/Community Reporter covers news on; community/department events, sporting events, teams, athletes, and fans. May also work through a variety of media outlets, including print, radio, television, and internet-based publications.
MAJOR JOB DUTIES:
- Communicate with public, in office or in the field.
- Receives assignments, local areas.
- Collects data and writes on newsworthy events and sports.
- Conducts interviews with community members and elders.
- Establishes contacts in tribal departments.
- Adheres to the deadlines so the paper to get out to the public in a timely manner.
- Take photos for the articles that will be published.
- Format pictures for publication.
- Be on call for short notice on news events and assignments.
- Be responsible for minimum 5 complete pages of the hard copy
- Layout news articles, pictures, department, community news.
- Label; sort, count and label for 1450 to 1500 papers.
- Works with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, desktop publishing programs, Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Cloud, other programs as needed.
- Helping public with archived news articles or photos.
- Working with other newspapers; reprint articles and photos.
- Social Media posts on events covered
- Other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR POSITION:
- Excellent communication skills
- Social Media Marketing knowledge
- Submissions to other newspapers across the country
- Writing to your audience – news, community, creative, etc.…
- Knowledgeable in editing
- Must be able to travel to assigned events with own reliable transportation
- Self-motivated to get the job done by deadline
- Detail Oriented
- Photography and formatting skills required
- Knowledge/experience using multiple software programs including but not limited to:
- Photoshop
- Excel
- Microsoft Word
- InDesign
- Cloud
- Other programs as needed to get information to public
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be at least 18 years of age or older
- Must have a valid drivers’ license and a good driving record
- High school diploma or GED required; BA in Journalism preferred
- Minimum of 6 months work in photojournalism or similar field with published articles and/or photos
- Must be physically capable of carrying equipment and lifting (bulk mailings).
- Must be computer literate with experience and demonstrated knowledge of photo and editing software
- Must successfully pass criminal background screening.
