Job description

Job Summary:

A central component of the Community Schools approach is the integration and alignment of school- and community- based services, such as health, mental health, expanded learning opportunities and family empowerment. Critical to ensuring this alignment and coordination is the Community School Director(CSD). The CSD should sit in the principal’s Cabinet. In NYC Community Schools, the CSD is hired through a community partner.

Collaborative Leadership and Practice:

● Serve as an advisor to the principal, providing leadership for coordinating the work of different school partners.

● Sit on the School Leadership Team and work collaboratively with the administration and School Leadership Team (SLT) to align the instructional focus with Community School programming.

● Member of the school’s Attendance Team Committee; help design and implement programs and services to decrease absenteeism.

● Convene and facilitate Collaborative Planning Meetings to ensure partnerships and resources are being used effectively and efficiently.

● Support the development and successful implementation of the school’s Community School Plan and its inclusion in the Comprehensive Education Plan (CEP).

● Work with school leadership to maintain a focus on results and track progress.

● Develop strong relationships with parents, students, and teachers, and ensure that all stakeholders understand what a Community School is and how it supports student achievement.

● Strengthen systems and structures to effectively collaborate on partnership development, resource allocation, and service delivery.

● Manage partnerships to ensure that ongoing programs are effective, seamlessly integrated into the workings of the school, and sustainable, as well as develop new partnerships that are aligned with school goals and needs.

● Improve communication with school leadership, classroom teachers, and all staff for enhanced delivery of information and services.

● Strategically use the budget for program planning, targeting student and family needs.

● Lead or co-facilitate the school-based Community Engagement Team/Community School Team (CET/CST), and community-wide meetings to create additional opportunities for information sharing, decision-making, problem- solving, and partnerships.

● Ability to organize a Community School Forum for year-end activities.

● Engage the school community (administration, teachers, non-teaching staff, Parent Coordinator, PTA, SLT, and community members) to support student achievement and align resources to the Community School’s vision and goals.

● Maintain up-to-date records and required paperwork for all programs including agreements for all partners and vendors.

● Participate in grant-seeking and other fund development activities.

● Manage a budget and implement program deliverables.

● Track enrollment and participation data for all programs.

● Serve as key contact for programs and services, including the communication and coordination of activities.

● Assist with branding the school and marketing the school to the greater community.

● Facilitate communication and relationship-building with community partners, key stakeholders, and volunteers including participation in community groups and/or committees.

Expanded Learning Time (ELT):

● Work with SLT, teachers, and partner agencies to integrate expanded learning and enrichment activities before, during, or after the school day with Community School activities, programs, and services.

● Build relationships and mechanisms to effectively link the school day to expanded learning activities.

● Assist the school in identifying outside providers for ELT, aligned to traditional school day, as necessary.

● Implement strategies to engage students and increase enrollment in the school and in the ELT programs.

● Design and manage extracurricular activities, including lunchtime enrichment clubs, book clubs, science and Math clubs, physical fitness opportunities and other programs and initiatives that are based on student’s interests INCLUDING CEI’S PROJECT BOOST, Coding & Robotics, Esports, Social Action Arts, live theater and cultural enrichment, high impact tutoring and other enrichment opportunities.

Attendance Improvement:

● Serve as a key member of the school's attendance team.

● Assist with data collection and research, and prepare relevant data to bring to meetings.

● Help to organize and oversee assets and needs assessment and seek input from teachers, school staff, parents, and students to determine the ongoing needs of students and families.

● Identify high-need students, coordinate with teachers to target interventions, and track and monitor the impact of interventions.

● Develop and implement attendance improvement plans and strategies with school community including partners

Family and Community Empowerment:

● Work with the Principal and SLT to create strong school-to-home partnerships and cultivate parents as leaders in the school.

● Support events that promote family and community empowerment.

● Develop community outreach and parent engagement opportunities and partnerships including a school-based resource center, linkages with colleges, universities, trade schools, local agencies, faith-based organizations, GED/TASC programs, and job training opportunities.

- Workshops to be determined by conducting a needs assessment and parent surveys to include services for parents of special populations including SWDs and ELLs/MLLs, SEL, parenting skills, and community concerns.

● Conduct Asset Mapping and use the NYC DOE Assets & Needs Assessment Tool to identify resource needs and gaps by developing partnerships to ensure the delivery of wrap-around services including but not limited to enrichment activities, youth development services, health, mental health and wellness, vision, dental, SEL, college and career readiness, social services, high-impact tutoring, and neighborhood-specific needed resources.

● Strengthen and support Parent Teacher Association (PTA) governance structures; attend and provide support, resources, materials, and incentives during PTA meetings, events, and activities.

● Provide on-site job-embedded coaching to parent leaders and parents by implementing strategies to increase parent engagement; offer parent workshops and parent and family activities and events.

● Develop a monthly calendar of events, activities, and resources to share with the school and community; post monthly calendars within the school and on the school’s website.

Wellness and Integrated Supports:

● Serve as a point person for coordinating health and mental health services in conjunction with the Office of Community Schools to include vision and dental screenings.

● Identify local community resources and broker new partnerships that are aligned with school goals and needs.

● Provide coordination of services and programs for students, families, and the community during and after the school day and throughout the year.

Suggested Requirements and Qualifications:

1. Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree preferred.

2. Bi-lingual skills may be needed depending on the needs of the school.

3. Ability to work effectively with school-aged youth, educators, families, and communities from a wide range of cultural, social, and economic backgrounds.

4. Experience working in school-based settings, with knowledge about tenets of community organizing, student support services, and youth development theories.

5. Ability to work collaboratively, with strong relationship-building skills.

6. If not a DOE staff person, must have DOE fingerprinting and background clearances.

Annual Salary: $75,000 - 85,000
