Community Outreach Specialist-(24140728)

We are looking for a Community Outreach Specialist to join our team in the Public Policy Program. The Community Outreach Specialist is responsible for supporting DEQ’s goal of providing high quality environmental leadership and services to all Montanans through consistent communication and meaningful public engagement activities. This position is responsible for coordinating with DEQ programs to build and maintain relationships with local and tribal governments, partner organizations, and community leaders. The position is part of the DEQ communications team and will support a variety of public outreach and media relations efforts across the agency.

The successful candidate must be a thoughtful and proactive communicator and should have a basic understanding of the ways in which environmental policies and services can impact peoples’ lives. The position requires excellent interpersonal skills, an ability to analyze and interpret complex environmental policy, and effective time management. Knowledge of cultural and historic resource preservation is desired but not required.

The Community Outreach Specialist position includes a career ladder for professional development and pay progression. This position may be eligible for occasional telework.

Minimum requirements include:
  • Bachelor’s degree with a major in public relations, communications, marketing, journalism, planning, or a related field.
  • Two years of directly related experience.
  • Experience should demonstrate:

o ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with diverse partners and stakeholders;

o understanding and application of strategic communication tactics;

o proactive communication skills; and

o talent for identifying, gathering, and analyzing pertinent information to satisfy communication needs.

  • Experience in natural resources or historic preservation is preferred.
  • Other combinations may be substituted.
  • Current valid Driver’s License and clean driving record in accordance with State of Montana Vehicle Use Policy
Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
