Hillsboro Public Library (HPL) is excited to announce the recruitment for a newly created position as Community Languages Selector, which will join our newly formed Access workgroup. As a member of the library's Access team, you are committed to serving the entire community. You will work closely with our Selector team, Data Analyst, and Volunteer Coordinator to maintain our internal and external materials services points, including our autonomous branches (Book-O-Mat and Novel Branch) and Tiny branches (library-sponsored Little Free Libraries).
Purchase and maintain materials for all ages for our Spanish-language collections and Community Languages collections: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Hindi, Japanese, Marathi, Russian, Hmong, Korean, Somali, Tagalog, Urdu, and Vietnamese.
To best serve our community this position is required to be Bilingual (speak, write, and read) in English and Spanish.
The TeamThe Access team is a key component of all our work within the library and includes Selectors, Cataloging and Acquisitions, and Library Materials Assistant teams. We are highly collaborative and work closely with other department colleagues to extend our collections and services points outside of our walls and beyond traditional book formats. All work and initiatives are driven by our patron driven "For Everyone/Para Todos" mission while embracing innovation, exploration, and connection.
The RoleAs the Community Languages Selector (part of the Librarian classification), you will select a variety of new and replacement library materials for assigned collection areas according to the Hillsboro Public Library's Collection Development policy and practices. This includes evaluating, selecting, and purchasing materials in various physical formats and for all ages. You will review and evaluate patron and staff purchase requests for inclusion in the library collection for both branches. This exciting new role will analyze our existing collections, evaluate community trends and ILS data to identify needs and interests of diverse communities, anticipates public demand, and improves collection performance.
You will maintain proficiency using vendor websites and platforms, the Polaris ILS and other software tools such as Tableau and Slack. Budget management will be a key component of this role and you will track materials budget expenditures and anticipates budget needs in assigned collection areas. Public service is an integral part of this role, and you will answer assigned collection development questions from library staff, patrons, and community members. Additionally, you will collaborate closely with the Access and Collection Development department, the Library's Data Analyst, and the Volunteer and Outreach Coordinators.

Current and upcoming projects:
  • Purchase and maintain materials for all ages for our Spanish-language materials and Community Languages collections: Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Hindi, Japanese, Marathi, Russian, Hmong, Korean, Somali, Tagalog, Urdu, Vietnamese.
  • Evaluate Community Languages collection areas to ensure that languages represented in the collection reflect the highest current languages spoken in our Hillsboro service area, including evaluating and making vendor recommendations for purchasing materials in these languages.
  • In collaboration with the Library's Public Information Officer, Parks and Recreation Department, and Access Manager coordinate the replacement of the current Tiny Branch structures and refresh the branding for the twelve Tiny Branches maintained by the library.
  • Purchase and maintain materials in various physical formats and for all ages for our two autonomous branch locations - the Book-0-Mat and the NovelBranch.

Acceptable Experience and Training
  • Master's degree in library science, Information Science, or a closely related field; AND
  • six months Library experience; OR
  • an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Licensing/Certifications
  • Valid Driver's License and safe driving record.

Bilingual incentive pay available
Preference will be given to candidates who are bilingual in Spanish/English and bilingualism is our ideal as opportunities for community engagement abound.
Employees who can demonstrate the ability to speak Spanish, or any language spoken by over ten percent (10%) of City residents as documented by the most recent U.S. Census, at a proficiency level determined by a fluency test administered by the City, will receive a monthly premium of three percent (3%) of their regular base pay.
