The North Carolina Department of Commerce is the state's lead agency for economic, community, and workforce development. The Department works with local, regional, national, and international organizations to fulfill its mission to improve the economic well-being and quality of life for all North Carolinians.

The Division of Rural Economic Development invites applications for Community Economic Development Planner I opportunities located in the Forsyth County region of North Carolina. Through strategic planning, land use planning, and downtown revitalization, this regionally-based position will focus on assisting local communities to enhance the local economic climate.

The Community Economic Development Planner provides support to the NC Rural Development Division, Main Street, and Rural Planning Center regarding technical assistance and information to rural communities related to economic development planning, including; strategic planning, implementation, and technical assistance. This position also works as a supporting planner with local government boards and stakeholder groups to examine the quality of life issues that contribute to economic development, including investment in rural communities, historic downtowns, parks, green spaces, waterways, and public spaces, transportation, infrastructure, and industrial sites.

Management Preferences:
  • Practical experience in working with local governments (or related organizations) in economic development, planning, management, and administration
  • Experience working with small towns and rural communities on community and economic development projects, with knowledge of rural economic development challenges
  • Strategic planning process
Master's Degree in Public Administration supplemented by courses in Planning or Business/Economic Development Curriculum; or a Master's Degree in Planning supplemented by courses in Public Administration or Economic Development/Business Curriculum; or a Master's Degree in Business Administration/Economic Development with courses in Planning or Public Administration, to equal two years' work experience.
