Purpose
PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
The purpose of this classification, under administrative direction of the Communications Manager, is to perform administrative and technical level work for the City Manager’s Office in the gathering and dissemination of information on behalf of the City. Duties include, but are not limited to, oral presentations, the development and publication of reports, news releases, interviews, digital information, graphics, and newsletters.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree from accredited college or university with major course work in public relations, journalism, English, or communications and five (5) to seven (7) years’ experience in public or media relations or news writing; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Candidate must possess excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills and have considerable knowledge of print, web, social media, video, graphics, public/community relations and intergovernmental relations. Must possess the necessary skills to respond to requests for information in a timely and customer service-oriented manner. Must have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to develop and maintain positive and professional relationships.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTSRequires the ability to obtain and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license.
Job Description
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Assists with the research, writing and editing of content for electronic and print communication channels, the city’s website, brochures, flyers, video scripts, newsletters, presentations, reports, social media postings and other communications materials concerning city activities, programs, plans and projects and other clerical duties.
Assists as needed in the coordination of special events including press conferences, open houses, ceremonies, ribbon cuttings and other public functions.
Monitors social media posts and news media mentions. Assists with photo assignments and photo editing.
Updates information on the city’s website.
Researches, compiles and assembles a wide variety of information to be used by others; compares data and information as directed.
Keeps appointment calendar and schedules appointments and meetings. Maintains department supply inventory and orders supplies as needed.
Performs both routine and non-routine administrative/clerical support duties as needed to support staff of Communications Division.
Enters variety of routine, technical, and specialized data into department computer system. Prepares, sorts, prioritizes and distributes incoming and outgoing mail.
Operates a variety of modern office equipment, such as facsimile machines, computers, copy machines, video equipment, recording equipment.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a variety of advisory data and information, such as policy and procedure manuals, plans, statistical reports, standard operating procedures, and capital improvement plans. Strong written and verbal skills and ability to communicate with a diverse public. Ability to understand and communicate, both orally and in writing, the policies, procedures, issues and services of the City.
Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; calculate decimals and percentages; compute discount, profit and loss, ratio and proportion.

Physical Ability: Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation. Tasks may involve performance under stressful situations.
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination. Tasks regularly require oral communications ability.
Environmental Factors: Tasks are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances.

The work performance of non-supervisory personnel of the City of Daytona Beach is routinely evaluated according to the performance criteria outlined herein:
Knowledge of Job: Has comprehensive knowledge of the methods, procedures, and policies of the City of Daytona as such pertain to the performance of the essential duties of the Communications Assistant. Has comprehensive knowledge of the laws, ordinances, standards, and regulations pertaining to the essential duties and responsibilities of the position. Has comprehensive knowledge of the organization of the department, and of related departments and agencies. Has comprehensive knowledge of terminology and related professional languages as such pertain to work responsibilities.
