Summary of Duties:
Answers 9-1-1 emergency and non-emergency calls from citizens of Hall County; obtains vital information and enters information in CAD; refers callers to appropriate agencies and/or contacts agencies and obtains assistance for caller.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Maintains and updates computer information on calls or refers needed change to Shift Supervisor, files all pertinent logs, and other records and documents that have been used during the shift.
  • Assists trained Communications Officers in the transmission of orders and receiving of messages from a large number of law enforcement and fire and EMS units, emergency response units from local, state and federal agencies, wrecker services, FAA, utility companies, and others.
  • Assists public over the telephone in order to obtain accurate and pertinent information.
  • Is trained to recognize duplicate and related calls and screens calls from trouble areas.
  • Maintains constant knowledge of emergency alert and disaster procedures.
  • Trained to make proper notifications of calls.
  • Must successfully complete GCIC/NCIC training, and certification test within first thirsty days of employment.
  • Observes and trains on operation of GCIC/NCIC. Receives and enters information on stolen vehicles, articles, and wanted/missing persons.
  • Learns and maintains knowledge of all main thoroughfares, access routes, and current construction in progress.
  • Must successfully complete Basic Communications Officer Training (40 hours) within first six months of employment.
  • Attends schools and classes as required or instructed.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is required.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications Required:
Education and Experience:

  • US citizen, or repatriated or a naturalized citizen of the United States.
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Criminal History and Driver’s History check required for P.O.S.T. Communications Officer certification.
  • Minimum score of 32 words per minute with 80% accuracy.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the minimum level of qualifications stated above.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Must obtain GCIC/NCIC Certification within the first thirty days of employment.
  • Must obtain EMD (Emergency Medical Dispatch) Certification within the first two (2) months from date of hire.
  • Must obtain CPR certification within the first two (2) months from date of hire.
  • Must obtain P.O.S.T. Basic Communications Officer Certification within the six (6) months of date of hire.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of geography of Hall County and its municipalities.
  • Ability to read a map.
  • Ability to speak with a clear well modulated voice.
  • Ability to make quick and accurate decisions and clearly and effectively communicate orally during crisis situations.
  • Ability to type and use a computer keyboard.
  • Ability to retain and use signals, codes and clear text in the day-to-day operation of an emergency communications center.
  • Ability to deal courteously and diplomatically with the public, co-workers, management, and personnel from other agencies.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with federal, state, and local agency officials, local and surrounding County Public Safety representatives, County departments, employees, media, and the public.

Physical Ability:
Essential functions of this position continuously require the ability to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing); operate a computer and other office machinery, such as a calculator, copier, and printer. Incumbents must continuously be able to think analytically; handle stress and emotion, concentrate on tasks, remember names and other details; examine and observe details; make decisions, and adjust to change. Incumbents must also continuously direct others; meet deadlines; stay organized; use math/calculations and use a keyboard/type.
Essential Functions frequently require the ability to move about inside the office; and move/transport items up to 10lbs.
Essential functions occasionally require the ability to bend body downward and forward by bending spine and legs, and twisting at the waist, hips or knees; reach overhead; push or pull; and repetitively use hands/arms/legs. Incumbents in this position are occasionally required to be on-call and work irregular hours.
Sensory Requirements: Essential functions regularly require the ability to use effective verbal and written communication; and use of hand/eye coordination and fine manipulation to use equipment.
Environmental Factors: Essential functions of this position continuously require the ability to either work with others or work alone.
