Job Description:
The Communications and Outreach Specialist for the Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America (CSREA collaborates with the Center Manager and Director) to manage internal and external communications to engage the Center's many constituencies.
This position is responsible for developing and implementing communications and Outreach for the Center that will effectively elevate the profile of the Center across campus, among its constituents, and in the broader higher education community. This position is responsible for managing website content for CSREA, social media platforms, and marketing and promotion.
The position manages the creative development, publicizing, and logistics of programmatic events; web content development and maintenance; social media campaigns and engagement; email communications; feature stories and faculty and student spotlights in narrative and video formats; and the creation of promotional materials (print and digital), aligned with Brown's digital-first communications philosophy.
The position provides planning and logistical support for program outreach and development to include international conferences, lectures, seminars, and meetings. The Specialist facilitates events with invited speakers and guests, alumni, faculty, staff, and students at Brown University, working with vendors, program stakeholders, and University events staff to ensure that events are appropriately supported and that the needs of participants are met.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in communications, public relations, marketing or a related field with 3-5 years related- work experience, or the equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Experience in a diverse academic setting preferred and familiarity with and an interest in the humanities and social sciences highly desirable.
  • Excellent communication skills both orally and in writing with the ability to elicit and communicate information in a clear, informative and concise manner.
  • Excellent proofreading and copyediting skills, including proficiency in Associated Press and MLA writing styles.
  • Capacity to use graphic design templates when applicable.
  • Proficiency with information management and communications databases.
  • Proficiency with Google Drive, MS Office, Google. Experience with or aptitude to learn Evernote, Constant Contact, Canva, Illustrator, and Mailchimp.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, especially Photoshop, InDesign and Premier, and the capacity to manage design vendors.
  • Knowledge and command of evolving social media, email marketing, and web content management platforms.
  • The ability to independently develop and implement short- and long-term goals.
  • Attention to detail and excellent organization skills.
  • Comfort dealing with a wide range of people (students, faculty, managers, directors, artists, etc.)
  • Ability to handle multiple, ongoing projects with varying deadlines and diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong interactive skills and ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues.
  • Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.
