Summary:

The Commissioning Superintendent is a crucial part of the successful completion of a project and is responsible for leading the start-up, commissioning, performance testing, and troubleshooting activities at utility-scale renewable projects.  This role involves 75% travel on a 21/4 rotation schedule.  The Commissioning Superintendent will typically spend 3 to 6 months on each project. 

Essential Functions:

  • Leads and coordinates Commissioning Engineers, Technicians, Vendor Representatives and Contractors on-site in completing all required commissioning testing for a project
  • Works with Project Manager and Construction Manager to:
    • Verify all test prerequisites are met prior to scheduled testing
    • Ensure all necessary resources are on-site to complete testing as scheduled
    • Jointly develop Punch List prior to systems being turned over to Commissioning
  • Observes testing in the field, ensuring all safety and work processes are being followed. Answers any questions testing personnel have during performance of tests.
  • Reviews all test result documentation for accuracy, completeness, and passing criteria
  • Leads troubleshooting efforts to determine cause of any failed tests or site underperformance 
  • Organizes site turnover and O&M documentation
  • Assists in establishment of the project Safety Tagging, Lockout & Work Permit Program and ensuring compliance with its provisions
  • Interfaces with the Owner’s Operations Department to schedule O&M training
  • Follows safety and security procedures and determine appropriate action.  Report potentially unsafe conditions and use materials and equipment properly
  • Leads meetings 
  • Participates in template and procedure development
  • Trains testing personnel on test equipment usage and standard work instructions
  • Attends work regularly and punctually, as scheduled or expected
  • Complies with the Employee Handbook, Code of Conduct, and Company Policies and Procedures

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED, required
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related degree, preferred
  • 4 years or more experience testing and commissioning electrical systems, preferably on utility scale solar and energy storage projects
  • OSHA 10 and/or 30 certifications
  • Must have a valid current driver license, eligible for corporate vehicle insurance
  • Ability to travel 75% and work a 21/4 rotation schedule (21 days on, 4 days off)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Advanced 

  • Underground and overhead distribution testing; transmission systems testing; single and three phase electrical testing
  • DC systems architecture and testing
  • Utility scale solar power plant design, operation, and testing 
  • HV and MV switching operations
  • Lockout/Tagout programs and safe practices when working on energized equipment

Intermediate 

  • Relevant codes and standards associated with the testing and design of electrical systems, including NETA, IEEE, NFPA 70E
  • Field construction, commissioning, and startup of renewable power plants
  • Planning, supervising, staffing, and directing daily work
  • Technical specifications and contractual documents

Beginner 

  • SCADA control systems
  • Operations and maintenance
  • Root cause analysis
  • Microprocessor-based relay testing and programming
  • Project execution, budgeting, and schedule

Oral and written skills

  • Technical writing skills
  • Ability to communicate issues to peers and superiors
  • Effective information transfer between contractors, clients, team members, and vendors
  • Clear and concise writing
  • Strong interpersonal and team skills
  • Ability to work independently and maintain a schedule for key deliverables
  • Functional competencies include accountability, prioritization, system thinking, collaboration, and attention to detail

Anticipated base salary range:  $134,000 to $158,000

The final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. This position is bonus eligible. This role also includes a daily per diem for food and housing expenses.

Rarely: climbing, pinching, and pulling and pushing 51 to 100 pounds required.

Frequently: reading, vision, sitting, standing, and walking required.

The employee is rarely exposed to vibration; occasionally exposed to extreme cold, extreme heat, humidity, and noise; frequently exposed to hazards in the work environment. 

Performs some sedentary office duties in the construction site office, but the role also involves a significant amount of time working outside on the active construction site performing construction support activities.
