The Commissioning Manager will work with project management, engineering, IT, operations and the automation suppliers to ensure the project’s controls scope/objectives are intact through the project life cycle. This role will work with automation and WES/WCS suppliers, focusing on new or retrofitted automation, supporting all development teams in launching greenfield automated cold storage sites. The Commissioning manager will work side by side with the local operations and maintenance technicians to ensure front line troubleshooting is set up with training and transition.
This person will function as a subject matter expert across controls systems (PLC/WES/WCS), mechatronics and hardware/devices, applying best practices to improve facility operations and business processes through sustained automation / mechanical reliability, and analytics/metrics development-reporting.
Essential Functions:
- Develop and execute project commissioning schedules and transition plans to manage design and integration of controls (PLCs, HMIs, Sensors, etc.) for new, or modify existing, automated machinery to enable automation of distribution processes for inbound, picking and outbound operations.
- Understand and troubleshoot any problems in integration of mechanical, electrical, or controls systems to enable rate and cycle time.
- Support all major PLC/WES/WCS conversions or upgrades to ensure defect-free launches for automated warehouses
- Augment and assist with User Acceptance Testing (UAT) and Operational Readiness Tests
- Support facility launches and go-live periods during ramp-up, overseeing process and facilitating training rollout to operations; handoff all best practices, training documents, tools, automation commissioning/testing and tested systems to maintain deliverables and SLA commitments
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering: Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics or Controls
- 5+ years of professional experience in areas of Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation, and/or Electrical Engineering
- Requires deep understanding of warehouse automation such as conveyor technologies, ASRS, AGVs, delayering, cranes, palletizers, multi shuttle, sorters, etc.
- Advanced electrical and controls troubleshooting ability of automation control systems: PLC, HMI, hardware, software, their related equipment, and field devices Must be able to travel an estimated 75% of the time to support projects.
- Experience with stretch wrappers, turntables, straighteners, and other inline pallet and carton devices required to make rate, as well as all the instrumentation, sensors, and safety devices highly preferred
- Rockwell Studio 5000 and Siemens TIA portal preferred
- Ability to set up, configure, design, and maintain automated systems networks (EtherNet, Profibus, Profinet, Modbus, DeviceNet, and/or ControlNet)
- Ability to develop, review, and analyze functional descriptions, instrumentation diagrams, blueprints, and interpret PLC logic
