Summary
Core Underwriter responsibilities include review, evaluation and classification of insurance applications and accounts, accept or reject applications, provide risk management/loss prevention advice and information, determine final premium and terms for insurance on accounts within their Letter of Binding Authority.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Develop and maintain a profitable Commercial Lines book of business through examination and evaluation of new and renewal commercial accounts according to JM underwriting guidelines, practices, initiatives, and tools.
    • Such underwriting documents may include but are not limited to: applications, questionnaires, inspection reports, security information and financial statements to determine the degree of risk
  • Leverage risk insights, data, and models to apply judgment and critical problem-solving skills to accept, reject or modify new and renewal business to ensure a profitable Commercial Lines book of business.
  • Determine pricing and terms that is commensurate for the exposure and in line with prescribed pricing and modeling strategies. Pricing and terms must comply with state regulations and the current JM pricing philosophy and must be well documented.
  • Generate new business sales and increase renewal retention through development and maintenance of agency relationships and internal stakeholders.
  • Ability to Identify gaps in coverage to align JM's products and value proposition to offer a solution that provides the contract certainty the customer needs.
  • Review and grant approval for files underwritten by others, as necessary. Train and mentor less experienced team members.
  • Effectively work within the department and with other departments to help improve products, procedures, work processes, teamwork, and services. This includes being positive representation from Commercial Lines, owning and maintaining small projects, and participation on internal project teams or committees.
  • Demonstrates strong analytical skills and acts as an innovative advisor.
  • Keep policy documents up-to date, well organized and according to company standards.
  • Ability and willingness to excel in a fast-paced, team environment with minimal guidance/supervision and strong decision-making skills

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in an insurance or business-related field and three or more years of related experience and/or training.
  • CPCU, CIC, or ARM preferred. Other applicable advanced designations either completed or in progress will be considered in conjunction with experience
  • Proficiency in Microsoft suite applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
