Description
The Combustion Mechanical Engineer oversees a small staff of Engineers and performs hands-on product design, analysis, and development of ovens, heat exchangers, and fryers. This high-energy individual uses successful interaction with vendors, internal team members, and customers to translate marketing requirements into product specifications and technical solutions using excellent verbal and written communication skills, an orientation toward details, and effective analytical problem-solving.
Requirements
• Develop novel combustion equipment and processes for industrial food ovens and fryer applications, with strong emphasis on natural and propane gas.
• Lead design, fabrication and lab testing of prototypes.
• Work with Sustainment and R&D engineers to complete customer trials of new technology.
• Develop and handle intellectual property portfolios.
• Provide global technical support data, as needed, for commercialized offerings.
• Design and operate testing equipment including dielectric meters, gas flow meters and combustion analyzer in relation to proving operating performance.
• Performs as an engineering project/program leader/engineer on projects/programs which are large or have many complex features.
• Demonstrates substantive thought leadership to further new ideas, products, services, and/or business processes to increase efficiency, effectiveness, and/or customer satisfaction.

• Lead combustion devices development including hardware fabrication, assembly, hardware verification and test.
• Support system design through all phases from preliminary design and analysis to detailed design, integration, test, and qualification.
• Support the development of project schedules and budgets
• Develop product requirements and specification documents
• Design components to be manufactured via CNC and conventional machining, sheet metal bending/rolling, welding, and other related processes using Autodesk Inventor CAD models and drawings
• Specify purchased content and ensure supplied components meet design requirements
• Create and release product Bills of Materials
• Develop test procedures, conduct product testing, and validate for production
• Perform and document Root Cause Analyses and Corrective Action Plans
• Travel to customer locations as needed to support commissioning and troubleshoot field issues
• Deliver presentations on technical findings and project status to cross functional teams and management
• Lead, mentor, develop and manage the work of other Mechanical Engineers and CAD Designers
• Comply with plant safety procedures to ensure a safe environment.
Education:
• B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from ABET accredited university required
• M.S. in Mechanical Engineering preferred
Experience and Capability:
• 12+ years of relevant experience
• Design of thermal systems such as ovens and fryers, preferably in the food industry
• 3D CAD modeling and drawing creation, preferably in Autodesk Inventor
• Deep understanding of mechanical engineering principles and methodologies
• Structural and thermal FEA, preferably MSC Nastran
• Combustion subsystem calculations and component requirements
• PDM use and best practices, preferably with Autodesk Vault
• Advanced technical writing and documentation
• Complex data analysis
• Strong verbal communication and interpersonal interaction
• Advanced problem-solving
• Management of multiple tasks and projects with high level of autonomy
Preferred Experience:
• Design of Heavy machinery, preferably food processing equipment
• Design of electromechanical assemblies and motor driven mechanical systems
• Design of combustion devices
• Thermal analysis using CFD
• Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance (GD&T) per ANSI Y14.5
• Training in Design for Six Sigma
Physical Requirements:
Most of the job function is performed in an office setting requiring minimal safety precautions, however occasional visits to the production floor are also required.
