Primary responsibilities include mentoring and advising undergraduate students majoring in bioengineering, electrical, mechanical, computer, environmental, and civil engineering during their first two years. Duties include initiating contact and advising students on courses required for majors and minors; familiarizing students with University policies, regulations, and graduation requirements; maintaining accurate student records; informing students of departmental and Career Center mentoring activities; tracking student degree progress; and facilitating and compiling letters of recommendation for students. Required to participate in all registration and schedule adjustment periods including June Focus and campus visit days, work with Admissions to set up faculty meetings with prospective students and families, and assist with orientation programs for new and transfer students. Other duties include clarifying the University Catalog language and advocating for student petitions to the Committee on Academic and Professional Standards.
Major Responsibilities:
- Advise engineering students regarding course selection and academic progress toward degree obtainment
- Advise and support students who are struggling with their courses to help encourage them to overcome the challenges they are facing
- Participate and assist in planning new student orientation (Focus) and other Visit Days, planned or spontaneous
- Other administrative duties (return phone calls, respond to e-mails, speak to parents, consult with transfer students, coordinate letters of recommendation, attend department meetings, etc.)
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty members, administrators, and other advising colleagues
- Attention to detail and strong organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize multiple requests and handle them in an efficient and timely manner
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills. Ability to multi-task and establish priorities and resolve conflict
- Ability to interact effectively with students and faculty of all cultural backgrounds and experience levels; ability to thoroughly understand and abide by federal and university guidelines regarding student confidentiality requirements
- Proficient use of computers and knowledge of various software programs
- The most important qualification for this position is caring for students and a desire to help them succeed
