Job Description
The Department of Music in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham invites applications for an Assistant Professor/Assistant Director of Bands. This is a non-tenure earning, nine-month appointment with a one-month summer duties supplement that will begin July 1, 2024. Primary responsibilities will be to teach applied Low Brass lessons to undergraduate music and graduate music education students and serve as Assistant Director of Bands, with responsibilities for both the Marching Blazers (football) and Blazer Band (basketball). Secondary responsibilities include teaching other courses as needed and playing as a member UAB Faculty Brass Quintet.
Responsibilities of the position include:
• Teach applied lessons in the Low Brass area on the candidate's primary instrument.
• Assist in the direction and administration of the UAB Marching Blazers and other athletic bands; coordinate and collaborate with UAB Athletics; lead the Basketball Pep Band.
• Teach courses in the music curriculum (may include brass techniques, pedagogy, and ensemble coaching).
• Perform as a member of the UAB Faculty Brass Quintet.
• Actively recruit and retain students for the Department of Music.
• Engage in outreach activities to promote the Department of Music within the university and the broader community.
• Conduct ensembles according to area(s) of expertise and provide other forms of support within the band program.
• Engage in department, college, and university service, including participation in faculty meetings, committees, academic advising, and events that contribute to the growth and success of the Department of Music.
With over 22,000 students and 2,200 full-time faculty members, UAB ranks in the top 20 public universities for federal research funding and is a major teaching-research university in the state. Birmingham is the largest city in Alabama and offers a vibrant cultural community with a wide array of recreational opportunities.
The faculty in the Department of Music value a mutually supportive community in which respect, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging are held in high regard. With 20 regular and 25 part-time faculty, the Department of Music offers the BA degree with concentrations in applied music, music technology, and music education and the MAE degree in Music Education. There are currently some 110 music majors and minors with a demonstrated history of strong growth and anticipation for continued expansion. UAB is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music.
Classes are taught and performances given in modern facilities including the Alys Robinson Stephens Center for the Performing Arts which features a critically acclaimed 1,342 seat Jemison concert hall, the Sirote proscenium theater, the Odess blackbox theater and the Reynolds-Kirschbaum Recital Hall. The Stephens Center is the site for many of the Music Department's concerts and recitals and is the home of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. The Hulsey Center is the home of the Department of Music and houses all faculty offices and studios, practice rooms, classrooms, and the 235-seat Hulsey Recital Hall. Home football games are played in downtown Birmingham's Protective Stadium, which opened in 2021, and home basketball games are played on campus in Bartow arena. Travel to select away games, tournaments, and bowl games is required.

Required Qualifications
A Master's degree in music is required along with evidence of effective studio teaching and leadership of athletic bands.
Preferred Qualifications
Doctorate in music or significant professional experience as a Low Brass performer and/or athletic band director.
