College Counselor

Primary job responsibilities include:


  • Develops and provides an effective comprehensive college counseling program to serve the needs of all students.
  • Manages Naviance curriculum and planning.
  • Maintains an efficient, sophisticated system for the organization and submission of all school documents to college admissions offices.
  • Manages college and career readiness curriculum for all grade levels.
  • Implements appropriate and prevention-oriented group activities to meet student needs and school goals.
  • Provides consultation to teachers and school leadership regarding information, strategies, and approaches for maximizing the total development of students.
  • Makes appropriate referrals to assist parents/families and students to obtain the benefit from community services.
  • Assists with managing dual credit partnerships.
  • Runs senior College App Kick Off program in the summer.
  • Provides workshops promoting postsecondary planning and options.
  • Develops and maintains cordial and collegial relationships with college admissions directors and representatives, military recruiters, trade school representatives, etc.
  • Manages college and career fairs.
  • Supervises and plans college visits.
  • Represents Herron Classical Schools at local, regional, and national conferences and workshops.
  • Conducts data analysis and produces annual reports.
  • Develops and strengthens relationships with community based organizations (ILI, CLD, etc.).
  • Provides college counseling services to assigned students.
  • Initiates and continually updates 4-year academic plans for assigned students.
  • Provides presentations to parents/guardians and students at each grade level about college admissions and the college search process.
  • Analyzes transcripts of transfer students to determine graduation progress and transfer credits.
  • Oversees the internship program.
  • Oversees graduation requirements and credits. Monitors, supports, and reports deficiencies.
  • Attends Annual Case Conferences to report on graduation progress and support postsecondary planning.
  • Assists with commencement.
  • Monitors the “No Grade” report and academic support and remediation programs that are developed and implemented.
  • Assists students and parents/guardians in developing an appropriate list of prospective colleges.
  • Provides direct support to students and families regarding college and career readiness.
  • Provides information and guidance to families about college scholarships and financial aid programs.
  • Writes the official School Letter of Recommendation for the senior class.
  • Updates School Profile yearly.
  • Maintains frequent communication with students and parents/guardians throughout the college application process.
  • Assists seniors in the development and polishing of college admissions essays and the completion of college applications.
  • Coordinates the selection and nomination for awards, scholarships, etc.
  • Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Job Requirements:

• 2 to 3 years’ experience in a culturally diverse high school is preferred.

• Counseling license required.

• Experience leading groups and working in teams to achieve academic success.

• Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and changing priorities.

• Ability to work in a team environment.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Proficient with Microsoft Office products.

• Bachelors’ Degree required, Masters’ Degree required.
