POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Collection Manager oversees the management, organization, housing, and documentation of the Wadsworth Atheneum’s diverse art collections. Reporting to the Chief Registrar and Head of Exhibitions, the Collection Manager will implement the museum’s comprehensive master plan for collection care by developing and implementing strategies for the proper handling, storage, preventive care, and protection of the collection. The Collection Manager is an integral stakeholder in the overall care of the collection, providing recommendations and strategies to promote best practices, resolve issues, and ensure consistency in practice.
Target Compensation: $52,000 annual salary
- Implement the museum’s comprehensive master plan for collection care by developing and implementing strategies for the proper handling, storage, preventive care, and protection of the collection.
- Prepares estimated budgets and provides oversight as it relates to individual projects and department/fiscal year needs
- Establish and enforce best practices for environmental controls, dusting, pest management, and disaster preparedness to display and safeguard the collection.
- Conduct condition assessments and coordinate necessary conservation treatments in collaboration with contract conservators.
- Mats, glazes, frames, and unframes works of art. Provides technician support to Conservators in advancing collection care. Perform basic mount-making activities and liaise with external contractors where necessary.
- Conduct regular physical inventories of collections to ensure accurate tracking and documentation of collection items.
- Collaborates with stakeholders across departments to identify strategies and tactics towards inventory reconciliation.
- Maintain comprehensive location records and tracking systems to facilitate retrieval and movement of collection items.
- Oversee standardized metadata standards to maintain accurate and comprehensive documentation of the collection and to promote accessibility.
- Other projects and travel as requested.
- Supervise volunteer and intern projects.
- Provide support to the Chief Registrar and Conservators and furthers institutional objectives
