SUBFUNCTION DEFINITION: Prepares and forwards patient claims to appropriate third-party payers. Analyzes and reviews claims to ensure that payer-specific billing requirements are met. Follows up on billing, determines and applies appropriate adjustments, answers inquiries and updates accounts as necessary.
REPRESENTATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES
CodingProvides Coding support as needed in all areas of hospital and/or professional coding areas. Reviews and screens the medical record to abstract clinical data and enters reliable date into 3M 360, Epic and/or Fastrack. Assigns DRG, ICD-10-CM/PCS and/or CPT codes to accounts in an accurate and ethical manner utilizing 3M encoding software and coding manuals. Effectively manages work responsibilities to meet deadlines, department and organizational bill hold and AR goals. Audit: Creates, coordinates and monitors coding and accuracy across professional and hospital coding teams. Reviews data to determine knowledge gaps. Creates action plans and follows up with appropriate training. Training: Performs new and remedial training as appropriate. Education: Completes coder education when appropriate to address gaps in coding knowledge and skill. Professional Develop
Maintains currency of CMS, State of Ohio, official coding and other guidelines, rules and regulations and applies principals as appropriate. Identifies and assumes responsibility for learning needs. Integrate new knowledge into practice. Successfully complete continuing education in order to maintain credentials. Serve as a Resource
Serve as a resource to billing providers, business directors, and staff of assigned divisions for accurate coding and documentation guidelines, policies, and procedures. Identifies training needs, prepare training materials, and conducts training for the billing professionals and staff to improve their skills in coding and documentation. Escalate issues when appropriate. Work directly with the new and established billing providers to educate and monitor their coding and documentation compliance. Develop education plans as needed so they are able to meet these requirements. Act as a liaison between the Epic team and the sub-specialty divisions in an effort to leverage the EMR to improve coding and documentation. Work with our 3M and Epic IS teams to work through issues and assist with software updates.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Required: High School or Equivalent 5 Years experience coding utilizing ICD 10 CM/PCS and/or CPT coding systems Certification/credentialed as a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) OR Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) OR Registered Health Information Admin (RHIA) OR Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
Preferred: Experience in all aspects of ICD 10 CM and/ or ICD 10 PCS, CPT coding Computerized encoder experience
