Job Title: Coder I
Reports to: Coding Lead and Director of Business Services
Supervises: N/A
FLSA status: Non-Exempt
Summary Description
This position is responsible for accurately coding and entering information necessary to process claims in a timely fashion.
This is a PRN position; the shift and hours will vary based on business needs. Click here for PRN benefit information.
Essential Functions
  • Processes charges received from the hospital, PENRAD, or other Outside Services to include Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-10), insurance, authorizations, admission dates, or any other necessary information.
  • Updates patient demographic information when a discrepancy in the account exists.
  • Pulls reports to support coding.

Employment Standards
Knowledge:
Business-specific knowledge: Coding experience with radiology experience preferred, ICD-10 and CPT coding, National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI) edits knowledge and medical terminology.
Industry-specific knowledge: Knowledge of: laws and regulations pertaining to medical records and patient confidentiality.
Mastery:
National Certification: Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Radiology Certified Coder (RCC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or Certified Medical Coder (CMC).
Specialized equipment: Computer, working knowledge of Microsoft Windows and other Microsoft desktop productivity software.
Abilities:
Ability to: work independently with minimal supervision; organize and prioritize work and complete within established, reasonable time frames; follow verbal and written instructions; establish and maintain professional working relationships with staff, physicians, management, patients and external contacts; pursue educational and training opportunities to continually add to personal and professional growth in knowledge, skills and abilities pertaining to this position; maintain strict confidentiality of patient, business and employee information at all times; exercise professional judgment and perform all duties in compliance with medical ethics and OSHA standards.
Education/Experience/Licensure/Certification: High School Diploma or GED required. One to three years in the insurance billing industry or more than one year with the company preferred. Medical coding certification is required. CPC or RCC preferred. Lower level of certification with coding experience may be considered.
