Job description

Position Summary: Case ascertainment, abstraction, data entry, staging, and coding of medical records of cancer patients with outstanding detail orientation, excellent organizational ability, combined with strong communication skills and data management experience.  These must be performed in accordance with established guidelines, manuals, and definitions as determined by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (ACoS CoC); the New York & Pennsylvania Cancer Registry (PCR); the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER), International Classification of Diseases in Oncology (ICDO), American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC), Guthrie Healthcare System Cancer Programs, and other applicable standard setters for inclusion in a comprehensive data base. Education, License & Cert: Preferred Qualifications:   Individuals currently holding special certification as a Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) in good standing with the National Cancer Registrars Association credentialing institution will be given first preference. Will Consider:   Current cancer abstractors who are eligible to sit for the CTR exam by meeting the following criteria as required by the National Cancer Registrar Association (NCRA): 1. Associate's Degree, NCRAAccredited Formal Education Degree or Certificate, and 160hour practicum in a CTRstaffed cancer registry. 2. Associate's Degree, Coursework of 2 semesters of Human Anatomy & Physiology, and 1950 hours (equivalent to one year fulltime) experience in the Cancer Registry Field. Experience: A minimum of two years experience with health information systems in a healthcare setting or central cancer registry.  Proficient in Microsoft Office, Cancer Registry software (Metriq), abstracting, cancer staging methodology, ICDO coding, and human anatomy and physiology.  Knowledge of medical terminology.  Experience with data requirements, case preparation for cancer conference presentation.  Excellent communication, teamwork and attention to detail required.  Proficient typing and keyboarding required. Essential Functions: 1. Achieve and maintain special certification as a CTR as required by the National Cancer Registrars Association and the Commission on Cancer. 2. Identify patients with malignant disease process according to departmental casefinding mechanisms.  Enter those patients into computerized data base as suspense cases. 3. Using knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and the cancer disease progress, assess the validity of available information on a tumor.  Consolidate the best information from all sources and enter data into the computerized cancer registry data base.  Performs cancer abstraction and data entry through consolidation of best information from all available sources on demographic characteristics, diagnostic history, diagnosis identification, diagnostic procedures, extent of disease, treatments, and follow up. 4. Code all diagnoses, procedures, surgeries, primary sites, histology, morphology, and other pertinent data elements using ICDO and any updated pertinent coding guidelines. 5. Perform ongoing and yearly followup of all applicable patients in the database according to the standards of the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and the Guthrie Cancer Program requirements. 6. Maintain abstraction timeliness & reporting requirements of the New York & Pennsylvania Department of Health Cancer Registry and Commission on Cancer National Cancer Data Base (NCDB) Call for Data. 7. Assist and coordinate Cancer Board meetings, cancer site specific meetings, and Cancer Committee meetings as needed and assist with Accreditation Applications and surveys of the Cancer Program and Cancer Registry. 8. Attend and participate in local, regional, state, and/or national cancer registry educational programs as needed or required, ie:  New York & Pennsylvania Cancer Registry Association, New York & Pennsylvania Department of Health Cancer Registry, National Cancer Registrar's Association, etc. 9. Keep current on changes within the cancer registry field through participation in educational events including internetbased programs, as well as published journals. 10. Maintain individual productivity statistics and follow national benchmark guidelines with productivity. Other Duties: 1. Travel for this position is sometimes required. 2. Other duties as assigned.
