Salary Range: $22.39 - $27.99

This is an open examination. To be eligible for the position under this examination, applicants must be a U.S. Citizen or have legally declared their intention of becoming a U.S. Citizen.
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, have a high school diploma or possess a GED and a valid driver's license.GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Reports to Code Supervisor under the direction of the Chief Building Official for the inspection of housing structures in the City of Canton. Performs related work as required. Employees of this class are also required to follow up on all properties to ensure completion with respect to Certificates of Occupancy, demolition, or complaints dealing with residential housing facilities.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
Employees of this class must apply the standards and regulations of Chapter 13, Titles 7 and 9 of the City of Canton Codified Ordinances and such State and Federal regulations as are required to protect and preserve the housing stock within the City of Canton.
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Inspects existing dwellings and buildings, either occupied or unoccupied by humans, in accordance with the provisions of Chapter 13 of the Codified Ordinances of the City and all other building codes and regulations enforceable in the City of Canton, State of Ohio, or as required by Federal regulations.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Employee must be familiar with construction terminology and general knowledge of building materials. Must be familiar with City of Canton Building and Housing Code. Ability to detect unsafe and unsanitary living conditions and make recommendations for their correction; ability to maintain positive working relationships with building owners, contractors and tenants; employee should possess good public relations skills. Employee shall be required to obtain an International Property Maintenance Code Certificate per International Code Council within 90 days of appointment.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Employees of this class must have a high school diploma or equivalent. Knowledge and experience in general building construction or inspection is required. Any combination of experience or training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities will be evaluated. Must possess a valid State of Ohio driver's license.SUBSEQUENT TO THE FILING OF THE APPLICATION, THE CANDIDATES WILL BE NOTIFIED OF THE FORMAT, LOCATION, DATE, AND TIME OF THE EXAMINATION.
The written examination will contain questions on the following subjects: public relations, analytical reasoning, math, reading comprehension, and Chapter 13 of the City of Canton Codified Ordinance.

RATING
Your name will be placed on a list of eligible candidates upon receiving a passing score. Once the list has been established, your name will remain on the list for a period of one (1) year.
IMPORTANT NOTICE TO VETERANS
As provided in ORC 124.23C, any person who has completed service in the uniformed services, who have been honorably discharged from the uniformed services or transferred to the reserve with evidence of satisfactory service, and who is an Ohio resident and any member of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States, including the Ohio National Guard, who has completed more than 180 days of active duty service pursuant to an executive order of the President of the United States or an act of Congress of the United States may file with the director a certificate of service or honorable discharge (DD-214 - Long version), and upon this filing, the person shall receive an additional credit of twenty percent (20%) of the person's total grade given in the examination in which the person receives a passing grade.
A member in good standing of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States, including the Ohio National Guard, who successfully completes the member's initial entry-level training shall receive a credit of fifteen percent (15%) of the person's total grade given in the examination in which the person receives a passing grade.
NOTICE OF DRUG TESTING REQUIREMENT
Pursuant to Civil Service Rules applicants are hereby advised that the position of employment being examined for is subject to a drug test. Accordingly, eligibility is not considered final until drug testing has been successfully completed with a negative result.
