PURPOSE OF POSITION


Maintain a quality program within the policy framework of Navajo Preparatory School, Inc. Assist each participating student achieve a high level of skill, an appreciation for the values of discipline and sportsmanship, and an increased level of self-esteem; establish a sense of worth and competence, self-discipline, recreational enrichment, as well as the principles of fair play and leadership.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Prefer certified teacher (NPS, Inc. staff given preference).
  • New Mexico coaching license required for the sport involved.
  • Experience and/or education in the athletic activity that is being supervised.
  • Must be willing to devote a large amount of time to students and the sport involved.
  • Must be sensitive, firm, insightful, adaptable, consistent and flexible.
  • Must have CPR/First Aid; Blood Borne Pathogen Trainings with Certification of completion.
  • A strong emphasis is placed on all forms of human relations and communication skills oral, nonverbal, and written.
  • Ability to speak Navajo is required.
  • A valid driver's license with a safe driving record.

New employees in this position must provide documentation of immunity or immunization against tetanus, diphtheria, and measles/rubella, and of tuberculosis status by skin test or X-ray within thirty (30) days of hiring, and at such additional intervals as may be determined by the immediate supervisor.

Background Check:

This position will require a complete background check as required by the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act and candidates must meet the Minimum Standards of Conduct as prescribed in 25 CFR Part 63.12.


Navajo/Indian preference:


Consideration for employment will be given to Navajo, American Indian or Alaskan Tribal member with the required documentation including the necessary qualifications to meet the minimum requirements of the position. The Navajo/Indian preference law shall apply in all aspects of the position.


EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION

The position is paid at a coaching salary rate and payable in two (2) installments during the term of the supplemental contract.

Note: Notwithstanding the above, this position is subject to possible furlough, or reduction in force under NPS, Inc. Personnel Policies; due to unforeseen reductions in program funding that requires such general program changes.


SUPERVISOR

Primary: Athletic Director, Head Coach


RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Support and efficiently carries out responsibilities in accordance with Navajo Preparatory School Board, Inc. (NPS) Policies and Procedures.
  • Represents NPS in a manner reflecting professionalism and which enhances community understanding of the program.
  • Secures and protects the confidentiality of NPS, Inc. student and staff personnel information.
  • Takes a leadership role in the development of the athletic program that coordinates with the academic and residential programs.
  • Uses sound and acceptable coaching techniques in all phases of the program.
  • Develops and adheres to an efficient and technically sound conditioning and injury prevention and treatment program.
  • Develops in conjunction with the Dean of Student Life/Athletic Director a sound system for equipment accountability.
  • Strive to build good sportsmanship among players, coaches, and fans.
  • Adheres to all School policies and procedures regarding the athletic program.
  • Models good sportsmanship and enforces sportsmanlike behavior among the players at all times.
  • Coaches individual participants in the fundamental and advanced skills necessary to develop their full potential in the sport involved.
  • Demonstrates ability to motivate the team and individual players.
  • Commands respect of the players.
  • Instills a positive attitude towards self, team, staff, parents, and sport on the part of individual players.
  • Communicates personal and program expectations to team and to individual players.
  • Coach's individual participants in the skills necessary for excellent achievement in the sport involved.
  • Plans, schedule, coordinate and a safe regular program of practice sessions during the course of the season.
  • Enforces all rules of the league, state and national association as they pertain to the respective sports.
  • A complete and signed parental permission form and physical examination card shall be in the hands of the coach or athletic office prior to an athlete beginning practice.
  • Assures that players and coaches understand the training rule policy.
  • Makes sure that all forms are returned to the Athletic Director promptly.
  • Recommends purse of equipment, supplies, and uniforms when necessary.
  • Oversees the safety conditions of the facility or area in which assigned sport is conducted at all times that students are present.
  • Establishes performance criteria for eligibility in interscholastic competition for the sport involved.
  • Follows proper procedures in handling discipline problems.
  • Cooperate with the administration, athletic director, fellow coaches and students to promote the best interests of the entire athletic program.
  • Cooperate with maintenance staff, transportation staff, and others who are involved in supporting the athletic program.
  • Demonstrates a positive attitude towards and enthusiasm for assistant coaching assignment.
  • Assume all duties as assigned by the head coach.
  • Assumes the responsibility for maintenance of facilities and personnel in the absence of the head coach.
  • Remain loyal to the head coach and to the team. He/she may have to give up some of his/her thoughts regarding team strategy; etc. to fit into the overall pattern as set forth by the head coach.
  • Report all injuries, misconduct, or other unusual situations to the head coach, Athletic Director, or the Executive Director of the NPS, Inc.
  • Attends clinics, workshops, and professional organization as related to coaching area.
  • Makes an effort to improve coaching strategies and techniques.
  • Must have Blood Borne Pathogen Training, CPR/First Aid Training with a Certificate of completion and renewed annually is required.
  • Enforces discipline and sportsmanship behavior at all times, and establishes and oversees penalties for breach of such standards by individual students.
  • Assist the head coach in checking in and inventorying all equipment at the end of the season.
  • Attend all practices beginning the first day to the end of the season along with being available for all staff meetings and scouting assignments.
  • Complete all requirements mandated by the State and National organizations.
  • Relate and interacts with colleagues, supervisors, other school staff, students, parents, and community members in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Commit to a growth plan that relates to the scope of services provide to the School.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the head coach or Athletic Director.

EVALUATION

Will be evaluated in accordance with the Navajo Preparatory School Board, Inc. policies and procedures.
