Job Summary:
Join Tlingit and Haida as the Co-Stewardship Intern this summer! This internship provides the unique opportunity to learn the importance of understanding Tlingit & Haida cultural practices, traditions, and how we can apply these concepts to modern land and resource management to support Tribal values.
The Tlingit and Haida peoples are the original occupants and guardians of the great land (Aani) known as Southeast Alaska. Tlingit & Haida is a sovereign Tribal government that manages Tribal affairs across Southeast Alaska and serves its members throughout the United States. Tlingit & Haida's historic and cultural heritage resources are located within Southeast Alaska, and the tribe is dedicated to the preservation and protection of those resources. Southeast Alaska is a cultural living space to Tlingit & Haida citizens, holding the history of their traditions and cultural practices, and is integral to their ceremonial practices and cultural traditions.
The Co-Stewardship Intern will work directly with the Co-Stewardship Coordinator to facilitate and support co-stewardship initiatives, opportunities, and natural resource management of land for the Tlingit and Haida Native Lands and Resources (NLR) Division.
This internship will take place in person in Juneau, Alaska.
Duties/Responsibilities:

• Research policy surrounding land conservation, natural resource management, stewardship and cultural practices.
• Facilitate stewardship and cultural practice discussions at Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area (MGRA) and Visitor Center
• Network and coordinate with local, regional, national, and Tribal governments to serve both as a tribal representative and as a resource to tribes.
• Collaborate and engage with the Seacoast Indigenous Guardians Network (SIGN) and the Alaskan Youth Stewards (AYS) program.
• Support in the developmental work for the Southeast Tribal Conservation District
• Visit local conservation sites and participate in surveying work.
• Assist with developing programmatic reports.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

• Interest in the field(s) of natural resources, environmental science, policy, or cultural resources.
• Willing and able to work outdoors in inclement weather and on challenging terrain.
• Able to both collaborate with a team and work independently.
• You will need access to a personal vehicle for this internship and have a valid driver's license to drive company vehicles.

• Ability to meet deadlines.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Must be a Sealaska shareholder, descendant of a shareholder, or spouse of a shareholder.
• Legally authorized to work in the United States
• Ability to travel as needed.

Education and Experience:

• Must be age 18 at time of hire

• Must be currently enrolled in post-secondary school/program or a recent graduate (1-2 years)

Preferred:

• Study in the field of natural resources, environmental science, policy or cultural resources
• Flexibility to work outside of normal work hours and travel within Southeast communities, as needed.
• At least a 2.5 GPA
• Strong critical thinking and research skills
• Self-starter with ability to adapt to a fast-paced work environment

• Must be able to perform computer-based tasks and processing for up to 8 hours, including sitting or standing, mousing, interacting with information on a computer monitor.

Work Environment:

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee will primarily work in an office setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal.
