Job description

The Vice President, Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer (VP/CNO) has the overall responsibility for nursing operations and Patient Care delivery throughout the Hospital and works collaboratively with other members of the Senior Leadership Team to ensure successful management of the Hospital.

The CNO participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of the Mass General Brigham and Hospital's mission, vision, values and goals and ensures alignment across Patient Care Services.

The Chief Nursing Officer has administrative and operational responsibility for all Medical/Surgical & Critical Care Units, Maternal Child Health, Ambulatory Nursing, Care Coordination and other clinical service areas as required. 

The CNO shares administrative on-call duties with other members of the Senior Leadership Team.

Responsibilities:

  •         Works collaboratively with the Strategic Leadership Team to facilitate the mission and goals of Mass General Brigham and WDH.  Participates in developing the Hospital's operational plan, budgets, resource allocation and policies. 
  •         Directs and coordinates evidence-based Patient Care delivery activities that follow the professional discipline standards of care and participates in the development, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of the Hospital's plan for the delivery of Patient Care.  Collaborates with leadership, medical staff and clinical areas in the shared decision-making process to improve the delivery of competent and compassionate care to patients.
  •         Leads and facilitates the tenets of Magnet with focus on nursing voice, quality of care, professional development and a healthy workplace environment. 
  •         Leads and champions enterprise asset management and collaborates with Mass General Brigham leadership to achieve system-wide strategic goals. 
  •         Participates in planning, promoting and implementing an ongoing continuous quality improvement program in order to monitor, evaluate and improve the delivery of care and service to patients.
  •         Monitors performance in clinical quality targets and oversees plans to address gaps in achieving these targets using vigorous quality improvement methods and resources.
  •         Fosters a culture and mindset around continuous improvement and better resource stewardship
  •         Promotes and advocates for a culture of safety and high reliability behaviors.
  •         Advances and champions a culture at WDH that embraces and improves diversity, equity, and inclusion organizational goals and demonstrates a commitment to the many benefits of a diverse, inclusive and equitable workplace environment.
  •         Develops and implements mechanisms to achieve and enhance collaboration among the leadership triad (nursing, physician, administrative) as well as fostering collaboration between nursing staff, physicians, and other clinical and support service departments.
  •         Participates in the evaluation, selection and integration of health care technology and information management systems that support Patient Care needs and the efficient utilization of nursing and other resources.
  •         Serves as a role model and provides visible leadership to support excellence and positive outcomes in the domains of quality, safety, patient experience and financial performance. This includes a leadership presence and engagement with staff and leadership, including off-shifts and weekends. 
  •        Develops and supports an environment for professional development and innovative nursing practice.
  •         Collaboratively establishes and approves nursing policies and procedures, standards of Patient Care and nursing practice and standards to measure, assess and improve patient outcomes.
  •         Utilizing current research and evidenced based findings, develops and implements organization wide Patient Care policies, standards and programs that describe how patient's nursing care needs or patient populations receiving nursing care are assessed, evaluated, and met.
  •         The CNO through the Nursing and Patient Care Services leadership team directs the activities of direct Patient Care providers at WDH and consults with team regarding departmental operations, human resources management, program development, standards of nursing practice, and Patient Care policies and procedures.
  •         Coaches and develops leadership team to work collaboratively to support organizational and personal excellence and develop talent and succession planning at all levels. 
  •         Attends Executive Committee of the Medical Staff and Board of Trustees meetings. 
  •         Participates in Mass General Brigham system-wide efforts including actively participating in the MGB and Community Division Chief Nurse Council and lead sub-committees and initiatives.
  •         Represents Advanced Practice Nurses (APPs) at the medical staff executive committee and reviews and approves initial and re-credentialing of APPs as part of the credentialing committee process.
  •         Hires, evaluates and supports the development of the Nursing and Patient Care leadership team in a manner consistent with the organization's mission, vision and values.
  •         Works collaboratively with the leadership team and Human Resources to develop and maintain effective recruitment, retention strategies and strategic workforce planning. 
  •         Oversees the preparation of the operational and capital budgets for all Nursing and Patient Care Services.  Ensures that budgets are monitored by the leadership team and maintained within the established institutional guidelines. Demonstrates ability to use data for benchmarking operational efficiencies and encourages innovations to achieve financial targets.
  •         Facilitates research in nursing and adoption of evidenced based practices, in other clinical services, and management systems.
  •         Performs a key leadership role in Emergency Preparedness including serving as Incident Commander or other Healthcare Incident Command System Staff positions, participates in Hazard Vulnerability Analysis (HVA) and assists with planning and implementing the Emergency Operations Plan.
  •         Performs other duties as requested.

 

Education 

  • Master's degree in Nursing or other appropriate degree; Doctorate in Nursing (DNP or PhD) preferred

Experience

  • 10 years of relevant leadership experience with demonstrated competence consistent with the hospital's mission, values and scope of practice

License/ Registration

  • Registered Nurse (NH) 

Knowledge and Skills

  •      Strong leadership, communication, negotiation, team building and analytical skills
