Job description

The role of the Cloud Network Architect is to serve as the lead designer responsible for setting strategic direction, providing technical leadership and oversight, integrating new and emerging technologies into production, and defining roadmaps - for both net new deployments and the continuous improvement of KCIT's Cloud and Network Services domains.

Teleworking Requirement
The work associated with this position will be performed through a combination of teleworking complemented with onsite work and meetings as needed. Employees will have access to shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.
Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection (access may be supplemented in some situations) where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours.
King County has a robust collection of tools and resources to support working remotely. The individual selected for this opportunity will be joining an innovative and progressive team that is redefining how we work in this department's hybrid environment.
Work Schedule
The normal workweek for this position is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Alternative work schedules may be considered. This position is not eligible for overtime pay.

  • Provides direction, guidance, and definition of IT architecture to effectively support the enterprise strategy.
  • Supports cloud and Network Architectural disciplines and champions' architectural initiatives.
  • Reviews existing processes and establishes metrics to improve business processes, as well as support of all architectural disciplines under their direction.
  • Leads programs to develop, maintain, and govern domain strategies.
  • Works on highly complex projects that require in-depth knowledge across cloud and Network Architecture domains.
  • Aligns architecture strategies to enterprise architecture.
  • Defines, explains, and advocates technology strategies.
  • Participate in developing and communicating architectural policies, standards, guidelines, and procedures.
  • Manages exceptions to architectural standards at an enterprise level.
  • Reviews and/or analyzes architectural requirements as needed for the organization.
  • Ensures the conceptual completeness of the technical solutions.
  • Leads teams in developing technology plans, plans to reduce technical debt, and roadmaps.
  • Provides strategic consultation to business and IT leaders.
  • Advises on options, risks, costs versus benefits, system impacts, and technology priorities.
  • Works with business leaders and technical teams to understand requirements.
  • Consults with project teams to ensure projects aligns with enterprise architecture.
  • Evaluation of emerging technologies in the cloud and network domains.
  • Collaborates with project management and IT leaders to ensure progress towards architectural alignment with project goals and requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of IT and business/industry work experience including architecture design and deployment, systems lifecycle management, and infrastructure planning and operations.
  • A minimum of five (5) years experience in multiple, diverse technologies and processing environments.
  • Skills relating to public cloud, on-premise networking and design including:
  • Designing, redesigning, and implementation of cloud-based connectivity, security, delivery and monitoring services relating to virtual networks, VPN, NAT gateways, DNS, load balancers, web application firewalls, application gateways, etc.
  • Experience with networking within Azure and AWS including hybrid connectivity options such as Microsoft Azure ExpressRoute and AWS DirectConnect.
  • Experience in implementing cloud governance frameworks, especially relating to the organization of resources and landing zones in public cloud provider tenants.
  • Designing a hub and spoke network topology in Azure public cloud.
  • Experience with hybrid geo-redundant client access VPN solutions spanning on-premises and public cloud. Cloud hosted and/or on premise Cisco AnyConnect experience is a plus.
  • Creating hybrid load balancing solutions spanning on-premises and public cloud. Advanced F5 load balancing experience is a plus.
  • Experience with Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery in a hybrid environment.
  • Experience with legacy three tier Network Architecture including in migrating core networking presence.
  • Experience with on premise SDN including Cisco Software Defined Access and Application centric infrastructure.
  • Designing networks for regional resiliency.
  • Host/guest networking options for both Public cloud hosted and on premise hosted VMware
  • Communicating technical subject matter to a diverse audience of different technical level.
  • Developing technical solution designs, documentation, gap analysis, and integration plans according to Enterprise Architecture standards.
  • Incident and problem management in a large, complex technical environment.
  • Demonstrated skill in working with cross-functional teams, building consensus, and coming to a resolution with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Skilled at handling multiple competing priorities while working on multiple complex, highly visible and politically sensitive projects.
  • High-performer and team-player.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Experience with Agile frameworks
Desirable Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or higher with Information Technology emphasis
  • Cisco Certificates (CCAr, CCDE, or CCIE)
  • Amazon Web Services and/or Microsoft Azure Certifications
  • Amazon and/or Azure networking certifications (AZ-700, etc.)
  • Optical Networking
  • Network technologies (BGP, SDN/SDA, and ACI)
  • Executing multiple, complex, highly visible and politically sensitive assignments
