Idaho Falls Community Hospital is looking for a Registered Nurse to join our Med Surg team!

JOB SUMMARY:

The Charge Nurse keeps the Med Surg unit running smoothly. They advocate for safe, compassionate patient care and manage team members during their shifts. The nurse in this position communicates with the physicians, nurses and other members of the interdisciplinary care team, as appropriate, about changes in patients’ conditions, including results of diagnostic studies and changing symptoms. They must be ready to respond quickly and accurately to changes in a patient’s condition or response to treatment. While this role primarily focuses on the Med Surg unit, the Charge Nurse should be able to perform general nursing duties in all departments with adequate supervision if the need arises.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The Med Surg Charge Nurse is responsible for ensuring smooth operations for the unit, making staffing assignments, addressing issues within the department quickly and advocating for patient care and safety above all else
  • Deliver care to address patient’s needs following the standard of care for patient’s age
  • Ability to perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patients, including pediatric, geriatric and the general patient population, and reassessments as per policy
  • Adequately assess and reassess patients’ pain, utilizing appropriate pain management techniques. Must work alongside the patient and their family to educate them on proper pain management
  • Ability to revise plan of care as indicated by the patient’s response to treatment and evaluate for overall effectiveness daily
  • Needs to interpret results of lab tests and take appropriate action based on the findings
  • Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and their clinical condition, as well as the ability to follow the five medication rights to reduce the potential for medication errors.
  • Identify areas where patients and their families need more information and formulate teaching plans to help promote patient’s overall well-being 
  • Interact frequently with physicians, nursing staff, other departments, patients and their families to ensure effective treatment and an interdisciplinary care approach when needed. Must have the sensitivity, maturity and ability to communicate clearly and concisely
  • Provide leadership and guidance to the unit CAN, LPN and RNs, provides supervision of all shift staff and is aware of all patients and their needs

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:     

  • Graduate of an accredited RN program. Current RN licensure in the state of Idaho. Current BLS (must hold upon hire or within 14 days of hire), ACLS, PALS, and chemotherapy certification and renewals as required (Can be obtained within 6 months of hire). Complete the Basic Dysrhythmia class as directed by management.
  •   At least 2 years of Med Surg nursing experience prior to eligibility for Med Surg Charge Nurse position.
  • Knowledge of basic nursing medication calculations and the ability to educate nursing staff regarding medication calculations.
  • In addition to the responsibilities of an RN, the charge nurse must be able to coordinate patient care, demonstrate leadership within the unit, and will participate in additional education related to the charge nurse role as indicated by the department manager.
