Responsibilities*
Basic Function and Responsibility
To provide direct patient care, to assist in the development, implementation, provision, and monitoring of pharmacy services; and to assist in the training of other pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, residents, students and healthcare professionals
Patient Care [70% effort/time]
  • Assist in the development and implementation of new pharmacy services as it relates to Pain Management - Complex Pain Service
  • Provide recommendations to primary teams who consult the Complex Pain Service to assist with selection of medications, dose titration, medication history and reconciliation, and other medication-related services for patients with complex pain
  • Interact on a daily basis with primary teams and pain subspecialties (Acute Pain Service, Palliative Care, Addiction Medicine) to coordinate a team-based approach to care
  • Lead relevant regulatory and quality assessment/improvement initiatives
  • Participate on appropriate Department, University, and Health System committees
  • Provide patient care services on weekends, evenings, and holidays based on Department need

Education [20% effort/time]
  • Assist in the development and provision of pain medication-related education and training programs
  • Serve as the expert in Pain Management; coordinating education, professional development, and serving as a liaison and contact for all things pain-related. Provide these services to:
    • Department of Pharmacy
    • College of Pharmacy
    • Patients, caregivers, and family members
    • Prescribers
    • Nurses
  • Participate in the didactic education and experiential training of students and residents.

Research [10% effort/time]
  • Conduct or participate in research, drug use projects, cost reduction/management initiatives, and quality improvement activities consistent with the University of Michigan Health System's goals and objectives.

Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Collaboration with the pain subspecialty consult services including Addiction Consult Team and Palliative Care Consult Service
  • Discharge medication reconciliation and patient/caregiver education
  • Development of additional Pain Management pharmacy services, protocols, guidelines, order sets, etc.
    • Perioperative pain
    • Opioid use disorder
    • Patient-controlled analgesia

Required Qualifications*
  • A Doctor of Pharmacy degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary.
  • Completion of two years of pharmacy residency or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience is preferred.
  • Board of Pharmacy Specialties certification is preferred.
  • Current licensure as a registered pharmacist by the Michigan State Board of Pharmacy is necessary.
  • Possession of a Michigan Controlled Substances license is necessary.
  • Excellent communication skills (fluency in writing, reading and speaking English).
  • Ability to perform a variety of manual dexterity movements (ie, keyboard data entry, IV preparation, etc.)

Work Schedule
This schedule for this position includes day shift with a weekend and holiday rotation

Additional Information
Supervision Received
General supervision is received from the assistant director and/or team leader, or other designated official.
Supervision Exercised
Functional supervision is exercised over pharmacy residents, pharmacy technicians, students, and other staff performing delegated pharmacy services.
Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
