  • Position: Clinical Nurse Educator and Quality Coordinator - Nursing Education
  • Location: Chicago, IL
  • Full Time
  • Hours: Monday - Friday; 32 hours per week; Flexible hours during the day, but to reach both day and night shifts, the educator must be flexible to come in early (6:30a-7a) or start later to meet with staff and provide education.
  • Required Travel: None
What you will need:
  • BS, MSN preferred; if not MSN, enroll in an MSN program within 1 year of hire.
  • 2 Years of leadership / education experience within a hospital setting.
  • OB experience - including Labor and Delivery, Postpartum, and Nursery.
  • Current Illinois nursing licensure.
  • Board Certification in a nursing specialty preferred. Required within 2 years of hire.
  • American Heart Association BLS
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills including knowledge of computer information systems.
  • Demonstrated coordination skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of adult learning principles.
  • Ability to analyze data, both from a statistical and trended standpoint to identify variances from benchmarks.
  • Positive attitude in order to effectively coach and motivate staff.
  • Ability to work effectively in group settings such as committees, councils, etc.
General Summary:
  • Working within a Magnet Organization, this position provides leadership in the development, implementation and evaluation of the professional development, education and practice of nurses in accordance with the mission, vision and philosophy of the Division of Nursing and Swedish Covenant Hospital. Educational activities are based on identified learning needs, address orientation, regulatory requirements and continuing education and support the goals of the organization.
  • This position ensures that patient care standards are appropriate for their assigned areas and that departmental performance meets hospital, local and national quality benchmarks and practice is consistent with the hospital’s operating goals at the unit level. Coordinates change in practice and measures nursing performance to ensure that nursing practice results in excellent quality patient care; ensures that safe nursing practice is evident on their assigned units and practice and systems result in avoidance of patient harm and risk.
  • This position facilitates education and training for additional hospital departments and employees as educational needs are identified.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (Specific to Nursing Units)
Demonstrates a commitment to the mission of Swedish Hospital and exhibits a service orientation and adheres to all responsibilities and standards of the hospital.
Nursing Professional Development, Education and Practice
  • Models expert practice and provides consultation to interdisciplinary team members, patients/ families/significant others as evidenced by:
  • Consistent applicability of the nursing process in delivering nursing care.
  • Consistent applicability of professional performance standards in their role – inspires board certification, professional membership and scholarly initiatives.
  • Systematically enhances the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice.
  • In conjunction with Director of Nursing and Nurse Manager coordinates professional development plans for all nursing staff within a practice specialty on assigned units; Provides feedback to directors and managers for the purpose of staff performance evaluations.
  • Develops, implements and evaluates staff development programs based on: Employee/nurse survey and Quality improvement data; Existing scientific evidence; Identification of opportunities for research
  • Addresses nursing competencies by formulating educational programs based on: Peer/Manager/Director/Nursing Division discussion and feedback. Employee/nurse satisfaction survey. Educational needs assessments.Quality data. Regulatory requirements.
  • Provides leadership in the professional practice setting and profession: Formally disseminates research findings through activities such as presentations, publications, consultation and journal clubs. Integrates ethical practice in all areas of nursing. Integrates research findings into nursing practice.
Quality, Safe Practice and Risk Reduction
Provides leadership in the following quality and safety-related initiatives:
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of Swedish Covenant and publically reported quality dashboard indicators and hospital operating goals.
  • Coordinates the collection of quality data and coordinates reporting of data to appropriate individuals, committees and task forces.
  • Evaluates practice on assigned units to ensure that practice is consistent with quality and safe-practice initiatives by actively reviewing trended data and directly observing nursing practice.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of patient care delivery and processes to identify reasons for variances from quality benchmarks that may contribute to patient harm and hospital risk.
  • Works with directors, managers, other educators, staff nurses and Quality Improvement staff in the design of patient care delivery and systems when negative variances are identified.
  • Facilitates change in practice when the care delivery model and systems need alteration to meet quality and safe practice goals.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of practice and system change on an on-going basis.
  • Exhibits a positive attitude towards improving behavior by embracing change in practice, coaching and leading staff effectively.
  • Recognizes appropriate patient care via direct positive feedback to nursing staff.
Hospital-wide Education and Training
  • Serves as a resource to hospital departments in identifying and addressing department-specific competencies as needed.
  • In collaboration with Department Manager, assists in planning, implementing and evaluating education/training programs as needed.

Other
  • Participates in regular meetings of the Educational Programming Department/SAGE Committee.
  • Participates in meetings, committees and task forces as assigned.
  • Maintains communication with Director, Educational Programming regarding educational activities and issues.
  • Assumes responsibility for own professional growth.
  • Performs related duties. The above may not be all inclusive.

ENVIRONMENT
  • May be in an upright position and moving about most of the working time.
  • May lift heavy objects.
  • Potential for exposure to chemicals, airborne diseases, blood and body fluids.
  • Risk of injury by violent patient.
  • The same as for any individual working in a hospital environment that is dependent on a ceiling ventilation system for in flow and out flow of air.
