SOME (So Others Might Eat) provides material aid and comfort to our vulnerable neighbors in the District of Columbia, helping them to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness through programs and services that save lives, improve lives, and help to transform the lives of individuals and families, their communities, and the systems and structures that affect them. We meet immediate needs with food, clothing, and healthcare and offer the tools one needs to live with hope, dignity, and greater independence.
The Clinical Counselorprovides individual and group counseling and supportive services to residents. Oversees and provides assistance with daily residential operations.
This position is at Kirwan House, located on First Street in NW Washington, DC. Kirwan House provides a safe space for those who have a desire to seek a new life in recovery.
Covid-19 Considerations: In alignment with DC Health, COVID-19 vaccinations, and boosters are mandated for personnel working in SOMEs healthcare-designated programs, which currently include Medical, Dental, Population Health, Behavioral Health Services (BHS), Exodus House, Jordan House, Kirwan House, Kuehner House, Leland Place, and Mary Claire House. Requests for a medical or religious exemption will be considered for reasonable accommodation.
Schedule: Saturday and Sunday, 9:00 am - 5:30 pm (16 hours/week)
Required: Bachelor's Degree; 1-3 yrs providing substance abuse treatment and mental health therapy, experience providing services to homeless
Required License/Certification: CAC I or II, LGSW or LPC by the District of Columbia Department of Health; CPR/First-Aid; Driver's License
Expected Contributions/Addiction Treatment Services:
- Provide individual and group counseling for addiction recovery and mental health issues
- Provide ongoing clinical strengths-based assessment and reporting of client behavior
- Provide crisis intervention and prevention in coordination with staff
- Facilitate client groups and assist with client engagement strategies
- Complete documentation for client charts and assist with oversight of clinical documentation
- Monitor medications and record information in the Medication Monitoring Record (MMR)
- Review possible medication side effects and communicate clinical concerns to medical and psychiatric professionals
- Transport clients to meet program needs, as necessary
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
- Knowledge of addiction treatment and mental illness
- Counseling skills
- Ability to communicate with diverse audiences
- Problem-solving skills
- Ability to set professional boundaries
- Ability to multi-task, despite competing priorities
- Proficient with MS Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
Reports To: Program Director
Position Designation: This position is designated as Safety Sensitive. You may be subject to drug testing prior to or during your employment with SOME. In this position, you may be disqualified from employment based on the presence of marijuana in test results, even if you possess a medical card authorizing the use of medical marijuana.
Physical Demands: Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds. Requires looking at a computer screen for several hours a day. May be required to sit for long periods. Must be able to travel to events and meetings offsite.
