Job description

Summary Objective:
The purpose of this position is to provide routine and emergency/crisis clinical psychological evaluation to adults in custody and employees, by providing assessment, psychotherapy, consultation, and referral services.
This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Provides professional and ethical administration and operation of psychological services to adults in custody.

  • Provides Mental Health/Behavioral Health program development, as well as facilitation of a wide variety of professional, self-help, and personal growth programs.

  • Conducts assessments, consultations, and psychotherapeutic interventions as appropriate.

  • Organizes and facilitates both individual and group psychotherapy on a regular basis to general population, program participants, and individuals in segregated housing.

  • Maintains an ongoing awareness of organizational development, modern correctional practices, and various management concepts as it relates to the psychology department.

  • Consults with management officials or unit staff on classification of individuals displaying possible emotional problems.

  • Provides professional opinion to staff on troubled and disruptive individuals.

  • Determines level of care necessary and provides referrals when appropriate.

  • Observes and identifies problem areas, assesses the need for additional behavioral science training programs and counsels on problems in stress management, crisis intervention, and related topics.

  • Develops, presents, and evaluates departmental training related to mental health and behavioral health.

  • Maintains professional relationships with other agencies, institutions, providers, and organizations involved in the delivery of psychological services for first responders.

  • Maintains security and confidentiality of information created or encountered in the performance of assigned duties in strict adherence with all applicable laws and regulations.

  • Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution.

  • The staff correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis.

  • Performs related work as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Psy.D or Ph.D in Psychology from an accredited institution.

  • Two (2) years of specialized experience working in a correctional setting. Preferred experience working with general population or specialized treatment programs such as substance use treatment forensics or transitional services programs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

  • Meets regular and punctual attendance standards and any special needs of the position as determined by management, including mandatory overtime and performing related work.

UNAVOIDABLE HAZARDS (WORK ENVIRONMENT):

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

  • Must have a valid license to practice psychology issued by the State of Kentucky Board of Psychology.

  • If applicant is not currently licensed in Kentucky, they must be eligible to transfer licensure. Applicant must apply for transfer through the Kentucky Board of Psychology upon hire.
