Project Outline:

Within the Precision and Translational Medicine (PTM) Oncology and Cell Therapy group we strive to develop a personalized approach to patient treatment with immunotherapies through the development and delivery of biomarker tests. These tests help predict which patients will be potential responders to treatments based on their unique cancer morphology.

This intern position will report into the PTM Vendor and Lab Management team but will be accountable to the lab(s) directly for benchwork. Our specific area focuses on the management of external specialty labs and internal lab operations. We ensure that our clinical study teams have access to testing labs that can support the development and validation of assays as well as testing of clinical trial patient samples. This testing can support the design of future clinical trials or be used to determine if a patient meets the criteria for enrollment in a current clinical trial. We also design and develop internal lab capabilities around Genetics and Genomics, Flow Cytometry, Pathology, Immunohistochemistry, and other Immunoassays. Our team further supports laboratory and business operations, including operational and capital equipment budget management and vendor contracts management.

In early 2024 we will be building out several new internal labs and the internship project will include hands-on benchwork and supporting the set-up of the Immunoassays, Flow Cytometry, and Genomics labs. The successful intern candidate will be expected to work with lab scientist(s) on new instruments qualifications, design and preparation of materials (e.g., contrived samples) for evaluations of vendors and technologies; as well as feasibility studies of new assays. Projects may include workflow set up or evaluation, ordering supplies and regents, obtaining quotes for additional equipment, ensuring lab readiness to receive equipment, setting up and/or documenting safety procedures and equipment maintenance, and creating process flow charts, etc. No prior knowledge of the technology areas mentioned above is required, but relevant coursework is preferred. You will be coordinating with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and experienced operations personnel to complete your projects. In addition, you will learn other aspects that the Vendor and Lab Management Team supports including what Confidentiality Agreements (CDAs), Master Service Agreements (MSAs), and Statements of Work (SOWs) are and why they are important. You will also learn about the vendor assessment and onboarding process, including qualification and compliance. As part of the project and overall learning opportunities you will collaborate with other functional areas outside of Research and Development including Legal (privacy and intellectual property), Procurement (contracts and equipment purchasing), and Quality (qualifications of external and internal labs).

This paid internship position requires a candidate to be pursuing a Bachelor of Science (as a rising Junior or Senior) or Master’s degree in a related scientific field such as biology, chemistry, biochemistry, forensic sciences, environmental science, biotechnology, etc. The position can be hybrid, with a mix of days in office on site in Cambridge, Mass and remote, but with flexibility for some weeks to be on site additional days to ensure completion of the lab work. Ideal candidate should be interested in the business functionality of a lab, or pharmaceutical company operations, and the technology area(s) listed above. The experience and knowledge gained from this internship will directly support a career as a bench scientist or as laboratory or business operations.

How you will contribute:
