Job description

JOB SUMMARY

Performs inpatient and outpatient medical management of shelter pets and client-owned pets. Practices veterinary medicine in accordance with Animal Humane Donor-subsidized Veterinary Clinic medical standards, the New Mexico Veterinary Practice Act, and the policies and procedures of our shelter. Performs indicated medical and surgical procedures for shelter pets, client-owned pets, and feral cats. Provides guidance to the staff in the Clinic and Animal Care departments. Responsible for maintaining a positive culture of teamwork in which quality medicine and exceptional client services are delivered.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

Performs high-volume, high-quality sterilization surgeries in accordance with the needs of our Adoptions department, feral cat program and as scheduled for privately owned pets.

Carries responsibility as the primary surgeon on special surgical cases on regularly assigned days; performing the surgical procedures and the follow-up for dentistry, soft tissue surgeries and orthopedic surgeries.

Performs examinations, appropriate diagnostics, and treatment for patients in our Donor-Subsidized Veterinary Clinic, shelter pets and feral cats as indicated.

Uses and maintains control of drugs and supplies in accordance with all applicable laws and Animal Humane policies.

Works with clients to assure thorough communication, encourage treatment compliance, and provide client education.

Manages the daily inpatient care of hospitalized pets.

Provides appropriate medical guidance and training to staff in the Clinic and Animal Care departments, students, externs, and interns.

Keeps prompt, legible and professional medical records for all patients.

Provides examination findings, treatment orders, and condition updates of shelter pets promptly to technicians, receptionists, or managers as needed for medical data entry & completion of medical orders.

Performs health examinations on shelter patients as requested by shelter staff.

Monitors the ongoing shelter population to help ensure a ready supply of healthy animals for Adoption.

Assists the Chief Veterinary Officer with innovating the best care strategies for shelter pets to optimize our live release rate.

Assists the Chief Veterinary Officer in managing the populations of our isolation and treatment wards to minimize patient stress and treatment failure.

Accurately and proficiently use Cornerstone, Shelter Buddy and other software used in the Clinic.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education

Must be a graduate of an accredited School of Veterinary Medicine and possess all licenses required by New Mexico law. Required to have current and valid DEA license.

Skills

Must be comfortable with high-quality, high-volume sterilization procedures.

Must possess excellent written and verbal communication and organizational skills.

Must be a collaborator, self-directed, motivated, and goal oriented. Required to exercise independent judgment and work in collaborative work environments.

Experience

At least 2 years practicing veterinary medicine in a clinic setting. In addition, 1 year shelter medicine experience preferred.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $60.00 - $75.00 per hour
