Do you have an interest in helping to support and expand high-quality climate journalism? NPR's Climate Desk is looking for an Editor to help develop Member station climate reporters and assist in building climate coverage capacity throughout the NPR Network.

The Climate Editor will help new station reporters shape coverage of the most important climate stories of the moment. The Climate Editor should have solid radio skills as well as experience covering climate change on digital platforms. An emphasis will be placed on supporting local and regional coverage.

This role will work closely with the climate station collaborative editor and team, as well as NPR's climate desk to ensure greater collaboration and coordination in their work.

The ideal Editor is curious, smart, innovative, flexible and thrives by supporting and developing other journalists. We are looking for candidates who share a passion for journalism and all things climate.

The Editor will report to the Chief Climate Editor and work closely with the Supervising Editor for the Climate Station Collaborative. This position is a one-year, grant-funded position based in Washington DC. Remote work considered.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Edit compelling stories for both audio and digital often on tight deadlines.
  • Embody our team's values of collaboration, transparency, consideration, inclusivity and equity
  • Work collaboratively with desk members, other NPR journalists, Member station reporters and editors and external editorial partners in developing regional and national coverage.
  • Strong journalism ethics. Develop, assign and edit original and breaking climate coverage that lives up to NPR's standards for accuracy, fairness and newsworthiness.
  • This position will take on a training and organizing role at an annual climate conference organized by the Climate Desk.
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

WORK LOCATION:

This is a remote permitted role. This role is based out of our Washington, DC office but the employee may choose to work on a remote basis from a location that NPR approves.

REQUIRED SKILLS
  • At least five years of journalism experience delivering to multiple platforms
  • Solid familiarity with climate science and other climate change topics
  • Track record as a creative storyteller, mentor and editor across journalistic platforms,
  • Ability to handle multiple and complex projects simultaneously under stringent timeframes and changing priorities/conditions
  • Ability to identify climate stories and trends and frame news in a way that inspires audiences and communicates how it will impact them.
  • Ability to work and coach reporters at various levels of experience in ways that are both rigorous and collegial.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • A teamwork mentality, flexibility. A proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public media system.
  • Cultivate and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace
  • Cultivate and support an inclusive and equitable workplace culture

PREFERRED SKILLS
  • Experience editing for radio preferred. Familiarity with public media appreciated.

This position is covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA. The minimum annualized salary for this position is $120,000.
