Job description

Colorado Public Radio (CPR) is seeking a Climate and Environment Reporter.

About the Position:

The Climate and Environment Reporter produces high-impact journalism that helps listeners and readers understand how the planet is changing, how those changes are affecting Coloradans’ lives and livelihoods, who is responsible, and what can be done to address it. You will produce daily reports on key Climate and Environment issues for digital, audio, radio, newsletters and social media and work on longer-term projects with the climate team. Most weeks, you will be expected to produce two digital web features, report on breaking news, in addition to fieldwork, interviews and working on bigger enterprise projects. You will mostly be able to develop your own areas of focus alongside your editor, and as part of that work, will often partner or collaborate with others in the newsroom. You will cover Colorado in ways that reflect and represent the state’s diversity, including a focus on underrepresented communities and regions.

This is a hybrid position, requiring regular work at CPR’s offices. If you live in the Denver Metro, Mondays are in-office due to a regular morning team meeting. This position’s required schedule is regular hours Monday - Friday with occasional night and weekend work as assigned.

About You:

You are a responsive, adaptable and reliable reporter, interested in climate reporting. You have a fast metabolism for producing stories that reflect what’s happening, an eagerness to cover breaking news, and a desire to create enterprise stories that start conversations about important environmental issues. You’re committed to diversity and inclusivity in sourcing and are able to develop a wide variety of sources from diverse communities. You’re a creative storyteller who leads their work with enthusiastic curiosity. You’re also an excellent collaborator who likes to work with other reporters on projects to better your own work.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 3 years of journalism experience and knowledge of fair and accurate reporting is required. Previous experience in climate or environmental journalism or experience in closely related journalism specialties like energy, science, agriculture, technology, or government is preferable.
  • Ability to generate story ideas that speak to varied, real, human experiences is required (a demonstrated experience earning trust and reporting on issues impacting underserved communities is preferred).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a strong attention to detail is required.
  • Ability to assess and appropriately balance daily news reporting with longer term journalism and an understanding of how these work together.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, meet deadlines, switch between tasks as necessary and work in a fast-paced, digital environment is required.
  • A valid driver’s license and clean driving record is required as this role needs access to reliable transportation to respond with urgency to news events. Newsroom vehicles will sometimes be available for your use.
  • Audio editing skills (particularly experience with Adobe Audition) are preferred.
  • While not required, candidates with strong Spanish language skills are preferred.
  • Previous experience with data journalism or the ability to produce work in different mediums such as social media, art / illustration, or video / animation are not required, but nice to have.

Education Equivalency:

  • High School or GED degree required. Relevant Associates or Bachelors degree may replace some of the years of experience required.

Don't meet every single requirement? Research has shown that women, people of color, and folks with disabilities are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single qualification.
