Form of workWhatcom County Assessor's Office is seeking to fill the position of Clerk III.
This position will work under the supervision of the Property Services Manager and perform diverse office, secretarial and clerical support functions duties to support and maintain the Assessor's Office property database.
Essential duties include but are not limited to:- Determining and responding to customer needs both in-office and over the telephone.
- Assisting in maintaining accurate parcel accounts for the tax roll.
- Accurately creating property account data based on recorded documents, providing data entry assistance to a variety of program areas including building permit information, property ownership and segregations, property exemptions, and personal property account maintenance.
- Assisting customers with applications for the Property Tax Exemption program for senior citizens and people with disabilities.
- Performing audit control and data verification in accordance with department policy/procedures, as assigned.
- Supplementing property assessment records when changes affect a certified assessment year.
- Providing support for clerical program areas.
Hours of Work: Monday - Friday 7:30 AM - 4:30 PM

- High school diploma or GED.
- Three years of progressively responsible general office, clerical, and/or secretarial experience.
- Experience in an Assessor's Office or land title office and/or maintaining database information is preferred.
- Completion of classes in real estate, taxation and are preferred.
- Completion of college-level computer courses in spreadsheets, databases and word processing are desired.
- Knowledge of basic taxation and real estate terms and income tax documents is desirable.
- Ability to type accurately and proficiently with a speed of 40 net words per minute and perform data entry with accuracy at 100 strokes per minute.
At its sole discretion, Whatcom County may consider combinations of education, experience, certifications, and training in lieu of specifically required qualifications contained herein.
Full Salary Range: Master Collective Bargaining Agreement
Range 108.0: $19.62 - $29.75 per hour
Salary increasing 4% effective January 2024 to $20.41 - $30.95 per hour
Hiring rate depends on qualifications. Hiring rate typically is limited to entry to mid of the posted salary range, subject to required approvals.
This position receives annual pay increases to the next step in the associated salary range (apx. 3.8%) subject to satisfactory performance, in addition to negotiated Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA). 2024 COLA approved for additional 4% increase and 2025 COLA approved for 3%!
