GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

A skilled position responsible for programs in support of library services for children and young adults. This position is vital to the public perception of the Library. This person must deal with not only the routine tasks of checking in and out materials, but also maintain the library’s crucial role of friendly and efficient service to the public as the children’s desk is normally the place the public with children interacts with the library and its staff and requests assistance. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Library Director.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Service Functions

1. Assist patrons positively and pro-actively with reference, circulation, catalog and informational needs.

2. Assist patrons in locating materials.

3. Answer reference questions, and advise patrons of library policies and regulations.

4. Assist patrons with the use of the public computers and copier.

5. Interact with a wide variety of patrons and staff in a friendly and caring manner.

6. Provide prompt, polite and professional service to all.

7. Respond productively to change, performing all tasks as required or directed.

8. Assist with cleaning and maintaining the facility and materials to provide an inviting environment.

9. Select, monitor, and maintain materials and collections for children and young adults at the library. Coordinate activities with staff in an effective and efficient manner.

10. Promote library services, programs, and materials

Marketing

11. Represent the library at community activities.

12. Promote the materials collection through displays, social media and other methods.

Programming

13. Provide book selection recommendations to patrons.

14. Provide induction, guidance and support for volunteers.

15. Develop and deliver preschool activities and after school and Saturday programs for elementary aged children.

16.Coordinate services to include stories, films, crafts, puppets, book clubs, etc., as necessary to encourage children and parents to read and utilize related library materials.

17. Plan, coordinate, and administer an active program for children in both English and Spanish.

18. Work in harmony with school librarians and teachers to encourage teens to use the library services by providing coordinated programs of interest for them.

19. Develop and deliver programs and special activities for babies, toddlers, children and young adults, adults and/or senior adults. Programs and activities may be onsite or off site.

20. Work cooperatively with library staff to develop summer programs and special emphasis programming.

Technical

21. Register new patrons upon their presenting acceptable identification items.

22. Maintain and update patron files and records as needed.

23. Maintain records and files on circulating materials utilizing the Circulation System.

24. Prepare checked in materials for shelving.

25. Inventory and weed collections regularly. Evaluate donations.

26. Assist with collection development.

27. Catalog materials and prepare for circulation.

28. Work hours as assigned by the Director, including evenings and weekends.

29. Perform duties as assigned during civil emergency conditions.

30. Perform all other duties as assigned by the Director.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 Knowledge of the Dewey decimal classification system.

 Knowledge of general library procedures and techniques.

 Knowledge of office practices and procedures.

 Ability to read, write and speak Spanish and English.

 Ability to communicate clearly with patrons, supervisor, and staff.

 Ability to prepare documents, compose letters and publicity announcements.

 Ability to make decisions in accordance with County rules, regulations, and policy.

 Ability to follow complex oral and written instructions.

 Ability to work without close supervision.

 Ability to use judgment in performing library duties.

 Ability to use current technology.

 Ability to pleasantly interpret library policies and procedures to patrons.

 Ability to work evenings and weekends as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school graduation or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma. Three (3) years experience in responsible work including experience with children.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS:

Certification in Child Care preferred.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS:

 Acceptable eyesight (with or without corrections)

 Acceptable hearing (with or without hearing aid)

 Ability to communicate both orally and in writing

 Ability to access, input, and retrieve information from a computer

 Ability to reach, pull, push, stoop, and squat

 Ability to lift and carry up to forty-five pounds
