General Statement of Duties
Schedules childbirth and newborn parenting classes for the Guilford County Health Department.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
This position receives childbirth/parenting class registration cards from Maternity Care Coordinators and from Health Department Spanish interpreters to send notices to clients and create rosters for the other Childbirth Educators. Work consists of scheduling childbirth and newborn parenting classes, supervising the staff that teaches the classes, and provides administrative support for the classes. This position also facilitates, teaches, and/or coordinates maternity classes as needed.
Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESEssential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Coordinate childbirth classes (in English) and childbirth education classes in Spanish.
  • Review and update childbirth education curricula.
  • Create a yearly schedule of classes.
  • Create rosters for Childbirth Educators.
  • Coordinate new maternity programs and classes as needed at the clinic sites or off-site.
  • Audit childbirth/parenting education materials and office supplies.

RECRUITMENT STANDARDS
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the normal labor/birth process and newborn care.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practice of public health.
  • Knowledge of common obstetric clinical practices and local hospital practices and policies.
  • Ability to work with different ethnic groups and general understanding of diversified needs of clients of various socioeconomic strata.
  • Ability to type and use a computer.
  • Ability to speak clearly and communicate well with others and ability to clearly pronounce medical terms.
  • Ability to use copier, fax machine, and calculator.
  • Ability to use laminating machine.

Typical Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Four-year degree from a college or university, preferably in a health-related field; OR, a registered nurse preferably with obstetrical experience; OR a two-year degree preferably in a health related field and two years of experience in childbirth education or related area; OR high school diploma or GED and four years of experience in childbirth education or related area.
Supplemental Information
Physical Demands:
An employee in this position must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. The employee must be able to perform light work exerting up to 10 pounds of force routinely and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force occasionally to lift objects.
Working Conditions:
The worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
Driving is Essential:
Driving is an essential requirement of this position whether driving a County owned or personal vehicle to conduct county business. Motor Vehicle Reports may be verified for valid driver's license and that the driving record is compatible with the county's driving criteria.
If a personal vehicle is operated for county business proper insurance is maintained as per Guilford County's vehicle use policy.
