Job description

The County of Nassau is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Child Protection Investigator, Part-time

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Conducts preliminary investigations into allegations of child abuse and/or neglect; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES

Under general supervision the duties require the use of independent judgment in conducting preliminary investigations into allegations of child abuse and/or neglect.

TYPICAL DUTIES

1. Conducts preliminary investigations into allegations of child abuse and/or neglect.

2. Identifies all children and residents of the home and clarifies their relationship to one another.

3. Interviews complainants, witnesses and subjects of the investigation, compiles statements for review, and refers contacts to on-site Child Protective Services Unit.

4. Investigates living conditions; examines home for the presence of hazards, and that children have access to appropriate nutrition, sleeping arrangements, and basic needs.

5. Observes, identifies, and documents signs of physical abuse and neglect on children in the home.

6. Interviews those familiar with the child's behavior and living conditions, such as relatives, mandated reporters, teachers, and neighbors to the extent possible in the first 24 hours, specifically, before the case is transferred to Child Protective Services staff.

7. Enters information obtained in all preliminary investigations, including notes and documented evidence into the proper database in accordance with New York State Social Services Law requirements, State and local policies, and established Department procedures.

8. May testify at court proceedings, as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

1. Considerable knowledge of the techniques, principles and practices of investigation.

2. Considerable knowledge of effective interviewing techniques and methods.

3. Considerable knowledge of local, state, and federal child welfare laws.

4. Considerable knowledge of the typical signs of child abuse and neglect.

5. Ability to establish and maintain rapport and effective working relationships with children and adults as the subject of investigation.

6. Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.

7. Ability to express oneself effectively, both orally and in writing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Training and Experience

Ten years of satisfactory experience in law enforcement.

Necessary Special Requirement

Possession of an appropriate class, valid New York State Driver License. Must have available for use an operable automobile for the purpose of transportation for visits to clients or for County business.
