Your Impact at SAM:
The Chief Pilot is responsible for scheduling aircrews, designating PIC positions for each flight, and maintaining pilot flight records. In addition, the Chief Pilot is responsible for mission focused training and certification of pilots, pilot currency, and qualifications, and maintaining and updating SAM Operations and Training Manuals.

Essential Function and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Demonstrates the Company’s vision and mission, while successfully performing its core values related to employees, ethics, operational excellence, safety, integrity, and corporate social responsibility;
  • Under the review and direction of the Geospatial Operations Manager, plan and/or supervise all flights as required;
  • As the Chief Pilot; serve as the primary trainer of all new UAS Pilots and UAS sensor operators, teaching them all the required instructions from the aircrew training manual and evaluating their flight performance;
  • Maintain a organized and effective record of the list of all UAS Pilots within the organization, their logged hours, office locations, currency of flying and certifications;
  • Review and approve risk assessments of flights;
  • Prepare and submit deconfliction information to clients that requires it when flying over sensitive locations and projects;
  • Effectively report any incidents or close calls to our safety department and effectively communicate those occurrences to our client;
  • Perform or schedule preventative and routine maintenance on sensor equipment and unmanned aircraft;
  • Maintain organized and effective record of all unmanned assets of the company, its assignments, and locations across all company’s offices;
  • Conduct routine inspections on all unmanned aircraft;
  • Ensure that all unmanned systems are in accordance with FAA regulations;
  • Ensure that all 'active' unmanned system have appropriate insurance coverage; and ‘inactive’ systems are removed fro,m such list;
  • Assist flight crews in the field with trouble shooting problems;
  • Lead or participate in research, test, and development efforts for new aircraft, payloads, and procedures;
  • Safety sensitive positions require Essential Mental Alertness which requires a constant state of alertness and safety; a high level of cognitive function and judgement; not mentally or physically impaired from any cause that can adversely affect ability to safely and competently perform duties of their position; ability to take prompt and appropriate response in operating conditions; ability to work in an unfatigued state; ability to accurately gauge lengths of time and distance; ability to quickly store and recall instructions in short term memory; ability to concentrate; ability to cope with sudden changes in surroundings and/or emergency situations and demonstrate a caring, committed and concerned attitude about safety;
  • Assist or lead proposal preparation and project costing;
  • Assist on demonstrations at local conferences or client’s presentation;
  • Perform other tasks as assigned to help accomplish the Company’s strategic goals.
What You Bring to SAM:

Education and/or Experience
  • Undergraduate degree in a geospatial/aviation field OR 6 years of progressive experience in an aviation role. Prior aviation related U.S. Military experience is a plus;
  • 1,000 hours total time, manned or unmanned;
  • 100 hours unmanned flight time;
  • Effective communication (oral and written) and organizational skills are essential;
  • A passion and ability for successfully troubleshooting problems.
Certifications and/or Licensing Requirements
  • FAA issued Part 107 Remote Pilot Airman’s Certificate required;
  • FAA Commercial Pilot Certificate preferred.
