Job description

Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a Chief Technician to support the Experimental Operations and Facilities (EOF) Division. This position will support the scientific programs and equipment in various programmatic divisions of the lab with an emphasis on radiological facilities and areas. Responsibilities include performing assembly, operation, and maintenance of equipment and experimental systems, while maintaining a schedule, and records associated with activities and operating systems.
Position Requirements

  • Experience with the installation and setup of laboratory equipment and experiments
  • Prior training and experience conducting electrical work. Ability to become Qualified Electrical Worker 2 (QEW 2) certified.
  • Proficient in the use of hand and shop tools, multimeters and basic measuring tools,
  • The ability to become qualified as a Level 2 radiation worker, which involves full dress out and respirator use.
  • Prior experience or willingness to work in a contamination, radiological, biological, chemical other hazardous environment
  • Strong safety mindset and ability to recognize and mitigate hazards
  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance of equipment found in experimental areas involving radioactive material, particularly ventilation systems, piping systems, electronics, motors, and controllers with the ability to operate, troubleshoot, and repair fluid, electrical, and mechanical systems.
  • Experience in working with tools and equipment to fabricate specialized parts for operating equipment.
  • Knowledge of techniques, equipment, and instrumentation in the areas of fabrication, testing, data collection, and quality assurance procedures.
  • Interpersonal, oral, and written communication for interaction with supervisors, Principal Investigators, support personnel, and outside contacts.
  • Ability to maintain careful written records related to system maintenance, system performance, and system modifications.
  • Must maintain knowledge and awareness of laboratory policies and procedures. Maintains awareness of the Laboratory ES&H policies and procedures and works in compliance on a day-to-day basis.

The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (ST2 or ST3) depending upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge, skills, and experience brought to the position. The requirements for the desired levels are as follows:
  • ST2 Level: AA degree or high school and 5 years of related experience, or equivalent.
  • ST3 Level: AA degree & 7+ years of experience, or equivalent.
