Job Summary
The Chief Social Enterprise Officer will be charged with leading the tactical operation of UTEC's Social Enterprises while also working with a team to recommend the overall strategic direction of Social Enterprise at UTEC. We currently have three Social Enterprises (mattress recycling, culinary, and woodworking) and a sub-brand to link consumer-facing offerings (Madd Love Market). The CSEO will be responsible for evaluating these Social Enterprises and determining the best opportunities for UTEC going forward, taking into consideration both opportunities for youth development and revenue generation.
The CSEO will work collaboratively with programming, development, and policy to guide the Social Enterprises based on the experiential needs of young adults, fundraising needs of the organization, and advocacy needs of the organization through the lens of the businesses. The CSEO will be responsible for leadership of new Social Enterprise design, strategy and implementation, as well as dramatic strategic changes to existing Social Enterprises including expansion or divestiture. Finally, the CSEO will take an active and front-facing role in fundraising and business development initiatives with particular emphasis on corporate partnership and major capital funding.
Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct supervision to individuals in the following positions:
    • Director of Culinary (A.D. of Food Production currently)
    • Director of Mattress (A.D. of Mattress Currently)
    • Woodshop Social Enterprises (A.D. of Woodworking)
    • Enterprise Assistant
  • Ensure effective time management of all direct reports
  • Provide regular supervision through; individual meetings with direct reports on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, ongoing feedback on progress as well as any performance concerns
  • Lead an annual written performance review with each direct report that includes areas for professional growth and the impact of their role on agency-wide goals and metrics for success

Responsibilities
  • Integration of Social Enterprises with overall young adult programming. This position will serve as a crucial link and building place for the integration between UTEC's young adult-facing programming and the development and management of Social Enterprises. This will involve:
    • Close collaboration with the Chief Program Officer and Senior Director of Programming
    • Awareness of the needs, interests, and skills of the young adults enrolled in programming,
    • Alignment with Social Enterprise management with the learning objectives of young adults identified in the intake and program delivery processes
  • Lead feasibility/business planning, execution, and evaluation of all UTEC Social Enterprises
    • Develop a three-year vision, plan, and goals in conjunction with UTEC leadership including a complete review of current operations, staff capabilities, roles, and responsibilities to form a basis for thinking about future planning
      • Identify business opportunities within existing Social Enterprises that will provide learning/training opportunities for our young adults
      • Generate profit for the organization to support programming
    • Develop and track key financial metrics, in partnership with our finance staff, to measure progress
    • Collaborate with Lead Program and Director of Evaluation to examine young adult metrics in order to measure their progress against business metrics to ensure all business and programmatic goals are being met.
  • Identify and foster partnership opportunities with businesses, nonprofits, and government organizations that will lead to:
    • Revenue growth either through grants/donations or the sale of UTEC products or acquisition of UTEC services
    • Development and major gift opportunities for the Social Enterprises and/or UTEC at large
    • Expense reduction through in-kind donations or preferred bidding opportunities
    • Community engagement through mutually beneficial interactions either formal or informal
    • Employment or internship opportunities for our young adults. Share these connections with Program Pathways staff for young adult referral and/or placement.

  • Oversee day-to-day execution of Social Enterprises to ensure operational excellence
    • Reporting to the CSEO will be Directors (assistant directors) of Social Enterprise Operations who will oversee the day-to-day operations of each enterprise. These directors will participate in annual planning and goal setting for the enterprises and their direct reports. They will be responsible for the establishment, monitoring, and reporting of business practices including safety, standard operating procedures, inventory management, hiring, DEI initiatives, and P&L management.
    • Develop staff through clear goal-setting and ongoing feedback/coaching
    • Interface with the finance and evaluation teams in business analysis and reporting
  • Partner with business development and marketing staff to develop marketing strategies and initiatives to promote the Social Enterprises and the UTEC brand.
  • Work with the leadership team, and primarily the Chief Program Officer to ensure the enterprises provide the optimal learning platform for young adults
  • Foster transactional relationships and long-term development and supportive relationships with corporate partners, new and existing, to drive sustainable and predictable revenue into the organization through Corporate outreach initiatives, business networking channels, and consistent collaboration with marketing and development.
  • Participate actively with the UTEC leadership team and in staff and young adult activities
  • Collaboration with the TC4E in their support of other nonprofits with Social Enterprises for shared learning/advocacy, etc.

Qualifications and Competencies
  • Demonstrated business acumen and leadership experience covering strategic planning, business development, and operational execution. Experience in the food industry is a plus.
  • Comfortable with hands-on work in terms of operations as well as the ability to step back to see the big picture and develop a vision for the future
  • Passion for being an effective coach, motivating and holding accountable all staff reporting to him/her to the highest levels of excellence
  • Demonstration of project management, business planning, and financial forecasting and tracking
  • Background in running business operations

Education and Experience
  • Minimum of a Bachelor's in a business field, MBA a plus
  • A minimum of 5-7 years of experience successfully operating a business unit or nonprofit with revenues above $1M

Salary range is $110,000-$135,000 plus benefits, commensurate with experience. UTEC offers a competitive benefits package that starts with 4 weeks of vacation (3 standard for all new employees and a week of agency-wide closure between the Christmas and New Year holidays), 12 holidays, 10 sick days, 2 personal days, health, dental and vision insurance, life insurance, an annual cost of living increase, a 457B retirement plan and up to $4,000 per employee of professional development support. With time, benefits grow to include up to 6 weeks of vacation, 80% coverage of employee health and dental insurance costs and availability for a 3 week sabbatical.
