Overview:

 

We are seeking a Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) to provide transformational and inclusive leadership in directing the organization, vision and strategy for the Human Resources Directorate in support of important national missions executed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  As a senior executive on the leadership team, you will collaborate with other senior executives to shape the workforce and culture needed for success in a highly technical and diverse organization totaling ~6,500 full time staff.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

 

In this role, you will have direct accountability for all traditional human resource functions. Setting strategy, ensuring the Human Resources Directorate has the needed talent, and leading laboratory-level change initiatives are all expected.  As a Federally Funded Research & Development Center (FFRDC), you will manage key relationships with the Department of Energy (DOE) staff that have oversight responsibility of ORNL.

Highlight of Responsibilities:

 

  • Provides leadership, strategy, design and execution of ORNL’s human resource philosophy, programs and initiatives. Ensure that ORNL maintains the proficiencies and capabilities that are required to meet our mission with DOE.
  • Support any laboratory-level change initiative, regardless of functional domain, with well-conceived and executed change management plans.
  • Drive innovative thinking and collaboration with organization leaders to deliver value to Human Resources and the broader organization.
  • Drive programs that competitively position ORNL to attract, retain, and develop staff.
  • Nurture and maintain strong working relationship with DOE counterparts.
  • Lead and drive efforts that shape the employee experience from on-boarding to exit.
  • Innovate strategies and structure to ensure effectiveness of career development efforts across all workforce types.
  • Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Basic Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, Human Resources or other related fields
  • 20+ years of progressive experience building, leading, and inspiring a Human Resources team and/or sub-function for an organization with diverse missions, or equivalent combination of education or experience.
  • Deep functional HR expertise and strong business acumen
  • Demonstrated ability to positively influence others, develop relationships, coach leaders, and act as a change agent in a highly matrixed organization

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Proven executive leadership experience
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and customer focus; ability to build relationships, influence and coach at all levels including senior executives
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs

 

Clearance:

 

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance.  As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
