Job Description

About Us:
Established in 2013, Operation Underground Railroad (O.U.R.) is a global mission-driven organization that exists to rescue children and others from sex trafficking and exploitation in the United States and around the world. We are active in over 30 countries and all 50 US States. Through partnerships with local and international government agencies and other Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO), O.U.R. shines a light to the world on the global epidemic of child sex trafficking by rescuing children from exploitation, working to place them and their families in safe havens by providing after-care support, and by providing training opportunities for law enforcement all over the world to improve their ability to aggressively fight human trafficking in their jurisdictions. Our work has no boundaries- we go where we are needed. To date, we have been involved in over 4,000 operations, impacted over 7,000 lives, and been involved in over 6,500 arrests worldwide.
O.U.R.’s specialized Operations Group, consisting of individuals who collectively have hundreds of years of experience fighting human trafficking, collaborates with and trains government and law enforcement agencies step-by-step on the best practices for rescuing victims of human trafficking.
The O.U.R. aftercare model is designed to provide opportunities for survivors to heal from their abuse and become empowered through education and vocational training. We believe that education is critical to promoting access to employment, and empowerment initiatives must be done in collaboration with local government, civil society organizations, and businesses to be sustainable. Our aftercare program prioritizes layered collaborations to provide survivors with every opportunity for reintegration, employment, and a fulfilling life free of abuse.
Because of the increasing role the internet plays in exploiting children, we believe one of the most effective ways to combat human trafficking is to increase the ability of governments and law enforcement agencies to track the online activity of child predators and leverage these investigations for locating victims and prosecuting offenders. O.U.R. collaborates with experts in the field to teach cyber investigation techniques and offer software designed to assist in digital forensic investigations, specifically relating to child sexual abuse material (CSAM), or other evidence of child sexual abuse.
The Opportunity
At this pivotal point in its history and growth, O.U.R. seeks a deeply compassionate, principled, and confident leader with a genuine interest in leading the fight against child sexual exploitation and human trafficking worldwide. We are seeking a strategic, results-driven, and collaborative CEO to drive transformative organizational change and decisively grow our impact globally over the next decade. In collaboration with the Board, the CEO will need to think creatively and strategically about the current opportunities and challenges facing O.U.R. and propose ways the organization will optimally serve as an engine for change. This is an unparalleled opportunity to lead a well-resourced, internationally known organization to fight one of humanity’s greatest moral afflictions.
This is a time of both tremendous change and significant opportunity as O.U.R. enters the next stage of its rapid growth trajectory. The new CEO will employ a seasoned hand and high emotional intelligence to shepherd the organization by providing laser-like clarity around goal setting, creating keen focus on talent acquisition and recruitment, and intentionally nurturing a culture of trust, transparency, and integrity. The ideal candidate is an organizational steward of brand and understands their role in growing and upholding the strong reputation of O.U.R. as a trusted partner and community asset. They combine a strong clarity in decision-making with a systems perspective and ability to coalesce human, financial, and social capital to drive towards measurable and equitable impact throughout the world.
The CEO is responsible for the achievement of all operational and strategic goals, including donor development, fiscal management, board relations, staff oversight, compliance to both legal and ethical standards, community relations and engagement, and all other administrative matters. The successful candidate will build upon O.U.R.’s extraordinary past growth and will display a powerful mixture of personal humility and indomitable will. Reporting directly to the Board, the CEO will oversee the annual operating budget of $40M+ and a team of 150+ passionate employees and contractors around the world, including five direct reports (Chief Financial Officer, Chief Revenue Officer, Chief Global Operations, VP of People & Culture, and VP of Legal Affairs and Compliance).
Candidate Profile
Passion for the Mission
The CEO will embody the values embedded within O.U.R.’s mission, programs, and work against child sexual exploitation. As a forward thinker, the CEO will passionately, boldly, and strategically identify opportunities for expanding or deepening the work domestically and internationally. The ideal candidate will be an individual of unquestioned integrity, ethics, and values, who can be trusted without reservation. Working in close collaboration with the staff and Board, the CEO will be motivated to achieve the greatest possible impact through the use of O.U.R.’s resources.
Strategic Thinking & Sustainable Growth
The CEO will be a strategic and results-oriented leader who will - in partnership with the Board, leadership team, and staff - develop and execute the vision for O.U.R.’s next chapter and help the organization strike the right balance between stability and growth. The successful candidate will have the ability to set priorities decisively, delegate responsibilities, assure accountability, and allocate resources to produce results. An engaged leader with a strong ability to inspire, the CEO will have experience leading through periods of growth and transition and demonstrate an ability to “think big” while ensuring both organizational sustainability and operational excellence. With experience scaling programs or organizations, the CEO will demonstrate growth capabilities while also ensuring that the organization’s structures and systems are built to support that growth. A track record of masterminding strategic planning initiatives and executing on those initiatives, coupled with the capacity to collaborate with diverse stakeholders toward a shared vision, will be crucial.
Servant Leadership & Team Development
The CEO will have a track record of success in organizational management and servant leadership. The ideal candidate will be incredibly ambitious, but their ambition will be first and foremost for the cause, for the organization and its purpose, for the team, and not themselves. The ideal candidate will possess the ability to empower a talented, mission-driven staff to execute on the organization’s vision and to attract new talent to lead the organization through times of transition and growth. The CEO will be entrepreneurial, forward-thinking, and driven to uncover new approaches to talent acquisition, employee retention and culture building. With confident humility, clear priorities, and strong communication, the CEO will encourage collaboration across functional areas and help all staff to understand their role in achieving O.U.R.’s strategic goals, leading to strong team cohesion and respect. The CEO will engender trust in the staff through a transparent and collaborative management style, focused on developing capacity, accountability, and innovation throughout the organization. The CEO will demonstrate honesty, humility, kindness and respect for individuals while modeling organizational values.
Relationship Building & Impactful Fundraising
With a strong understanding of O.U.R. and its programs, the CEO will possess the ability to convey the organization’s mission and impact authentically and publicly to diverse audiences. The ideal candidate will possess a deep knowledge of fundraising and will be adept at engaging major donors to support the work of O.U.R. The CEO’s exceptional interpersonal and communication prowess will facilitate positive, new and ongoing connections with funders, high level corporate donors, and international NGOs and law enforcement partners. They will possess a history of building credibility with high-net-worth funders and corporate partners, a skill pivotal in securing new revenue sources and ensuring ongoing success. With a strong network, the CEO will excel in forging authentic connections, building rapport with stakeholders from various backgrounds, and leveraging these relationships to magnify O.U.R.’s influence.
