Job Description
Montgomery College, Rockville campus is seeking an outstanding Full-time Chemistry faculty member beginning January 2024 or August 2024. We are seeking an enthusiastic professional with a strong commitment to undergraduate education and the ability to motivate and engage students to succeed.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to student success, working in a multi-cultural environment, commitment to the community college mission and have effective oral and written communication skills. The Rockville Chemistry department has multiple general chemistry and organic chemistry teaching laboratories in a modern building facility with dedicated laboratory staff to support instructional laboratories. Faculty and students have access to analytical instrumentation including low-field NMR, FT-IR, GC-MS, AA, HPLC and UV and fluorescence spectrophotometers. Faculty have opportunities to engage with students through honors coursework and in undergraduate research. This position is part of a collective bargaining unit.
Teaching assignments may include various delivery modes, such as face-to-face, on-line, hybrid and/or blended formats during days, evenings and weekends. Montgomery College has three campuses and instructs courses at area high schools. Faculty may be assigned to teach in-person at any of these campuses and teach online.
Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Teach general chemistry lecture, discussion and laboratory courses. There may be opportunities to teach organic chemistry, non-majors chemistry courses or interdisciplinary courses.
  • Faculty members are assigned a workload consisting of a standard minimum of thirty (30) equivalent semester hours (ESH) per academic year and may include daytime, evening, and weekend and/or accelerated classes or possibly be asked to teach on another campus or online if needed. Opportunities may exist to teach summer session classes.
  • Faculty members are expected to serve on departmental, campus, and college committees, hold office hours, advise students, participate in course and program assessment, and maintain an active personal program of professional development. Faculty members have additional opportunities and support to supervise undergraduate research projects, participate in grant activities, and participate in professional organizations and activities.

Required Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Education or related Chemistry field.
  • Demonstrated excellence in classroom instruction using a variety of teaching methods.
  • Experience integrating technology into course delivery including use of a Learning Management System.
  • Experience utilizing high-impact teaching pedagogies to foster student engagement and active-learning.
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusive and equitable teaching practices and support of a diverse student population.
  • Demonstrated effective collaboration with colleagues.

Submit a teaching portfolio which should include (1) a summary of instructor or TA roles, responsibilities and modalities (1-page maximum); (2) a statement of teaching philosophy (2-page maximum) which should include your teaching goals for student learning and examples of methods and strategies used to promote student engagement as well as equity and inclusion in the classroom and (3) a minimum of two sample assignments or student activities designed for in-person and/or online modalities; and (4) evidence of effective teaching (2-page maximum; i.e. representative student evaluation data, classroom observations, recognition awards, professional development to evaluate or improve teaching).
4. Submit an un-official copy of your transcripts from highest degree earned.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Doctoral degree in Chemistry, Chemical Education or related Chemistry field. ABDs will be considered, but applicants are expected to have completed the degree by the start of the appointment.
  • Experience teaching college-level general chemistry and organic chemistry using research-based instructional strategies.
  • Experience developing and teaching online chemistry courses.
  • Experience teaching honors or interdisciplinary courses.
  • Experience mentoring undergraduate research in chemistry or interdisciplinary projects.
  • Experience supporting students through extracurricular activities or community outreach.
  • Evidence of commitment to professional development and scholarly activities.
  • Experience supporting students to overcome barriers to academic success.
