Chemist/Physical Scientist

This position is in EPA, Region 5, Laboratory Services and Applied Science Division, Science and Quality Assurance Branch. About: R5

This is an office-centered position*--you must physically report to the duty station stated in this announcement on a regular basis.

Qualifications:

In addition to the educational requirements, we are looking for at least one year of specialized experience related to this position as described below:

To qualify for the GS-13 level, you need to have at least one year of full-time experience equivalent to the GS-12 level defined as planning for environmental data collection; establishing quality assurance/quality control requirements in plans and procedures; and evaluating environmental data quality.

Your answers to the online assessment will be used to evaluate your competencies in the following areas:

• Knowledge of federal, state, local, or tribal environmental regulations, policies and requirements.
• Knowledge of professional science or engineering principles, theories and practices sufficient to serve as a technical authority in quality assurance (QA)
• Skill in oral communication to provide technical assistance to federal, state, and/or tribal government officials.
• Skill in applying QA/ quality control procedures associated with environmental data collection activities sufficient to perform assessments of monitoring and analysis programs.
• Skill in applying auditing techniques to determine adequacy of a quality system.
• Skill in applying quality assurance principles to environmental research.
• Knowledge of environmental/chemical contaminants and parameters.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education:

You need a degree or combination of education and experience as described below to qualify for this position.

A bachelor’s or higher degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in: 

1. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

   or

2. Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

1. Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

   or

2. Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
