The Certified Sign Language Professional is a highly skilled individual responsible for facilitating effective communication between deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals and those who do not use Sign Language. This role requires certification in American Sign Language (ASL) and proficiency in conveying spoken language into accurate and culturally appropriate Sign Language.
Key Responsibilities:
- Interpretation Services: Provide professional Sign Language interpretation during meetings, appointments, classes, and various events. Ensure accurate conveyance of spoken language into ASL and vice versa.
- Adapt signing style to meet the communication needs of diverse individuals.
- Translation: Translate written materials, such as documents, emails, and educational materials, into ASL.
- Maintain clarity and cultural sensitivity in translating complex information.
- Cultural Competence: Demonstrate a deep understanding of Deaf culture and sensitivity to the needs of the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community.
- Foster a positive and inclusive environment in all interactions.
- Collaboration: Work closely with clients, educators, healthcare professionals, and other stakeholders to facilitate effective communication.
- Collaborate with colleagues to ensure consistency in interpretation and translation services.
- Continuous Professional Development: Stay informed about advancements in ASL and Deaf studies.
- Attend workshops, conferences, and training sessions to enhance skills and stay updated on industry best practices.
Qualifications:
- Certification as a Sign Language Professional.
- Bachelor's degree in American Sign Language, Deaf Studies, or a related field (preferred).
- Proven experience in providing Sign Language interpretation and translation services.
- Strong knowledge of Deaf culture and awareness of cultural nuances in ASL.
