Job Description
The Certified Medical Laboratory Technician will assist the medical technologist in performing various tests in one or more areas of work, such as hematology, immunology, or toxicology, for use by physicians in diagnosing and treating patients.
- Perform chemical, bacteriological, serological, or microscopic laboratory test procedures on specimens in one laboratory section.
- Perform quality control to ensure proper functioning of instrumentation reagents, and procedures.
- Recognize instrument malfunctions and abnormal test results and take corrective action.
- Calibrate, standardize and maintain instruments following established procedures.
- Prepare reagents, standards, and controls according to prescribed procedures.
- Validate, review, and report results of tests performed.
- Assist in training students and new staff members in laboratory tests and procedures.
- Perform tests requiring routine and/or complex instrumentation such as optical, photometric, fluorometric, electronic, automated, and scintillation.
- Research and develop new Medical Laboratory procedures as assigned.
- Dispose of or properly handle biological, radioactive, and/or hazardous waste in a manner that is consistent with laboratory, university, state, and federal government policy.
- Participate in ordering supplies, materials, and equipment as needed.
- Perform related work as assigned.
- May complete unit/department-specific duties and expectations as outlined in department documents.
- Supervision is received from a Laboratory Supervisor or a designated individual
- Functional supervision may be exercised over technical and service support staff when designated by departmental supervisory staff.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), the American Medical Technologists (AMT), the American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB), or other MLT certifying agencies.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Additional license/certification requirements as determined by the hiring department.
