Job Summary:
Assists the clinical providers in caring for patients of the medical clinic. Provides quality health care in a warm and caring environment. Ensures that the provision of healthcare services takes place in a professional non-biased environment and is accomplished efficiently.
Essential Functions:
- Assists medical professional staff in providing medical care to patients of the medical clinic
- Sets up exam rooms for appropriate patient procedure.
- Assists patients into examination rooms.
- Obtains patient vitals i.e. blood pressure, temperature, weight, etc.
- Obtains chief complaint (presenting problem).
- Assists with surgical procedures.
- Assists with casting, suturing, wound debridement, and dressings.
- Accurately records patient information in their health record.
- Performs diagnostic testing on patients per medical provider's order.
- Maintains knowledge of infection control issues for proper reporting.
- Follows OSHA guidelines.
- Administers injections per written/verbal order
- Administers immunizations, allergy shots, and other injectable medications.
- Assesses patient for adverse reactions.
- Maintains frequent contact with patients.
- Communicates with other departments and outside programs to coordinate specialty care referrals, procurement of durable medical equipment, and medication pre-authorizations.
- Answers/returns telephone calls.
- Provides coordination of care with outside facilities for provider ordered diagnostic services.
- Assists with various specialty care clinics.
- Stocks rooms with consumable supplies.
- Maintains medical supply inventory.
- Provides patient education.
- Performs other duties as instructed by medical providers.
- Authorized to serve both eligible and non-eligible beneficiaries in an outreach capacity both on and off site.
- Performs a variety of other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Education, Experience, and Licenses:
- Requires a High School diploma or GED and minimum of two (2) years' experience in medical assisting preferred or a minimum of one (1) year work experience in a medical clinic setting preferred OR equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Must maintain a valid Oregon driver's license or obtain one upon hire, qualify for the Tribe's vehicle insurance, and provide proof of personal vehicle insurance.
Qualifications, Registrations, and Certifications:
- Current certification as a Medical Assistant required.
- Knowledge of applied medical assisting principles.
- Current CPR/First Aid Certification required.
- Ability to operate a variety of medical equipment.
- Must have knowledge and experience in use of standard computer operation and software applications.
- Must have knowledge of OSHA Guidelines.
- Must have knowledge of infection control reporting.
- Knowledge of Native American culture preferred.
- Must have a working knowledge of the Privacy Act/HIPAA and its applications.
- Knowledge of and sensitivity to Native American culture required.
Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements:
- Continually requires the ability to express or receive detailed information or important instructions through oral communication.
- Continually requires working with fingers rather than the whole hand or arm. Requires repetitive movement of wrists, hands and/or fingers. Often requires walking or moving about to accomplish tasks.
- Requires standing and/or sitting for sustained periods of time, raising objects from a lower to a higher position and/or moving objects horizontally.
- Continually requires the use of vision, specifically close vision, color identification and depth perception.
- Occasionally requires lifting of up to 40 pounds.
- Due to the nature of the interactions with other employees and the public we serve, employees may be required to provide documentation of, or receive, certain health vaccinations.
- This position is frequently subject to inside environmental conditions which provide protection from weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes, and is occasionally subject to outside environmental conditions.
- Continually required to wear plastic/latex gloves and safety shoes.
- Continually required to handle soiled laundry.
- Occasionally required to wear safety glasses.
- Occasionally exposed to compressed gases and detergents.
- May be called upon to serve as a Disaster Reservist during Emergencies, or when the Tribal Emergency Operations Center is opened.
- Local travel is occasionally required. Travel outside of the state is infrequently required.
