The role you'll contribute:
Assists surgeons in preparation for and during surgical procedures.
The value you'll bring to the team:
Utilizes physician preference cards to set up operating suites. May update and route cards appropriately, when instructed
Determines appropriate surgical equipment and supplies, based on physician's preference and sets up the procedure room with the correct instrumentation and supplies
Achieves temporary and permanent hemostasis by applying appropriate techniques
Assists with body plane closures, wound dressing applications, and securing drainage systems
Surgical assistant shall be familiar with common positions related to the surgical procedure and will be able to use the equipment necessary to provide the position
Positions patients appropriately for best exposure as ordered by physician, uses stabilizing equipment when necessary, and prioritizes patient comfort and safety, while maintaining the desired temperature range for the patient
Provides visualization for operative sites by applying appropriate methods, which includes tissue manipulation, retraction, sponging, suction, and irrigation
Assists team with safe and appropriate operating room turnover times in an efficient and organized manner
Supervises other healthcare team members in the surgical environment
Performs operative shave prep, scrub or other patient care tasks as assigned by the RN
Anticipates the moves of the surgeon
Prepares and maintains surgical area
- Proficient in scrubbing for all operative procedures within the scope of service
- Identifies unsafe or defective instrument/equipment and implements appropriate corrective action
- Verifies completeness of instruments/sponge/needle count
- Cleans instruments, equipment and room as appropriate when procedure is completed
Ensures proper disposal of instruments, linen, trash, needles, sponges and other biohazardous waste
Completes all annual mandatory educational requirements
Primary preceptor for orientation and instruction of surgical personnel
Performs other duties as assigned
The expertise and experiences you'll need to succeed:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
High School education or equivalent upon hire
Successful completion of an accredited Surgical Technology Course upon hire
Requires one of the following:
o Minimum ten years' total experience as a CST/CFA
Each year of CST experience = half a year
Each year of CFA experience = whole year OR
o Skilled experience in 3 of these major surgical specialties (Orthopedics, Spine, Neurosurgery, or Robotics
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:
Completion of Certified Surgical Assisting Program
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED:
- Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or RQI upon hire, then renewed quarterly following the RQI protocol
- Current Surgical Technologist First Assist certification from one of the following upon hire:
National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) as a Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) upon hire
National Surgical Association as a Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) upon hire
American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA) upon hire
8 hours Hip and Knee Replacement/Spine Education within 6 months of hire date, then annually
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
Ability prepare surgical suites with appropriate instruments, resources, and supplies based on surgeon preference cards
Strong physician/surgeon relationship skills and team mentality
Up-to-date knowledge of patient rights and ability to respect cultural, psychosocial, and spiritual values
Up-to-date knowledge of applicable regulatory, compliance, and accreditation standards and requirements
Ability to communicate appropriately and effectively with patients and their family, hospital staff, nurses, physicians, and other health care professionals
Must be able to read, write and speak conversational English
Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office
Able to precept and act as resource person and preceptor in multiple surgical specialties
