This Manager-level role will lead clinical application teams and manage day-to-day operations for a team of Cerner resources within our EHR Services practice. This role will be required to support complex cross-functional teams, implement, and improve standard processes and tools to guide operational efficiencies while building out our Cerner Center of Excellence (COE) within EHR Services. The Cerner Clinical Manager will have responsibility for the success of multiple client engagements and overall operational and clinical performance of Clinical Applications within the Cerner COE.


The Cerner Clinical Manager will help create and foster a culture of diversity and inclusion within a new and growing service line for Optum.


The Cerner Manager/Lead must be a self-motivated individual with exceptional communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work well in team environments.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage a team of Cerner analysts and consultants, and serve as a mentor, resource, and primary advisor for all direct reports
  • Supervise Cerner application design, configuration, and maintenance activities for Clinical Applications
  • Implement appropriate service delivery models for clinical application functions in defining, delivering, and improving services for the organization
  • Collaborate with end users to design and maintain the Cerner system in a timely and professional manner and suggest corrective configuration or enhancements
  • Determine staffing requirements, perform capacity planning for resources and supervise the work of direct reports to ensure that team is functioning effectively and efficiently
  • Provide support for application incidents reported through the help desk; including 24/7 on call coverage as required
  • Develop, recommend, and ensure that team operates within project and department budget guidelines
  • Identify system optimization and enhancement opportunities and collaborate with vendors and other IT analysts to design and implement effective solutions
  • Manage in-depth analysis of workflows, data collection, report details, and other technical issues associated with Cerner software
  • Work with trainers to develop and maintain application specific training curriculum and materials
  • Adhere to organization standards for system configuration and change control
  • Develop solid relationships with end user communities, customers, and business partners
  • Facilitate communication with stakeholders from initial requirements to final implementation

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 7+ years experience combined experience across HealthCare and/or IT domains
  • 5+ years experience working with Cerner configuration
  • 3+ years experience with resource management and/or large-scale project management
  • Solid knowledge and experience in a minimum of three clinical Cerner solutions
  • Knowledge of clinical solutions applications metrics, KPIs and process improvement techniques relative to these areas
  • Proficiency with MS Project, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint, and SharePoint
  • Ability to travel up to 25% annually, USA domestic locations. Travel may be lower depending on project requirements.
  • Full COVID-19 vaccination is an essential requirement of this role. Candidates located in states that mandate COVID-19 booster doses must also comply with those state requirements. Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Business Administration, Health Administration, Data Science or Healthcare
  • Certification in Service Management, Project Management, or Business Analysis
  • Possess excellent team management, communication, curriculum delivery and leadership skills and a commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion and a culture of innovation


Key Competencies:

  • Excellent time management, organizational, and prioritization skills and ability to balance multiple priorities
  • In-depth knowledge of Cerner EMR and the full implementation lifecycle of Cerner's suite of EMR solutions
  • Ability to lead others and to communicate the importance of training to all stakeholders
  • Develop and implements performance improvement initiatives aimed at improving end user service, operating costs, group functions & productivity
  • Demonstrate the ability to build and maintain solid internal relationships as well as motivate and inspire other team members through solid consultative skills
  • Capacity to manage multiple competing objectives and to clearly communicate results
  • Demonstrate a solid ability to build partnerships and influence others. Work across team, group, and business boundaries to drive commonality and reusability in solution to real-world problems
  • Demonstrate solid relationship management skills and ability to handle challenging interpersonal situations

California, Colorado, Connecticut, Nevada, New York City, or Washington Residents Only: The salary range for California, Colorado, Connecticut, Nevada, New York City, or Washington residents is $101,200 to $184,000. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
