Position Information
The North Dakota Advanced Agriculture Technology Engine, a collaborative endeavor between key private and public stakeholders across North Dakota, has been selected as an inaugural awardee for the U.S. National Science Foundation's (NSF) Regional Innovation Engines competition.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) will provide visionary leadership, establishing and driving the strategic direction of the program. As the principal leader, the CEO will spearhead the development and deployment of innovative AgTech initiatives, fostering collaboration across diverse stakeholder groups, and ensuring the Engine becomes a pinnacle of excellence in the AgTech sector. The ideal candidate is visionary, innovative, and passionate about the potential of AgTech to address pressing global challenges. They are adaptable, results-driven, and deeply committed to inclusivity, collaboration, and sustainability.
This position is funded through an initial 2-yr, $15M National Science Foundation (NSF) Cooperative Agreement with an anticipated award up to 10 years and $160M. The role is a position at North Dakota State University, as the lead organization for the program.
Salary: Commensurate with experience.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in related field.
  • Proven experience in executive leadership role(s) demonstrating effective communication, strategic alignment, and collaborative relationship building.
  • Ten years of experience related to ecosystem functions such as user-inspired research, translation of innovations, and/or workforce development.
  • Track record of successful innovation, strategic thinking, and driving organizational growth.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with a diverse set of partners, conflict resolution, and building consensus across organizations.
  • Ability to work under pressure and collaboratively with a team, industry partners, and a governance board to achieve organizational mission.
  • High level analytical skills, excellent judgement and creative problem-solving skills.
  • Strong project management skills and demonstrated experience implementing and continually improving programs.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree or other advanced degree.
  • Knowledge of innovation financing, entrepreneurial support, and intellectual property.
  • Understanding or experience commercializing innovation.
  • Experience establishing and leading rapidly growing startup organizations.
  • Familiarity with North Dakota region and/or upper Midwest agriculture.
  • Experience managing federal grants, contracts, and/or cooperative agreements.
  • Experience in budgeting, financial forecasting, and resource allocation.
  • Knowledge and understanding of agriculture and agriculture economics.
  • Demonstrated ability to pivot and respond to rapidly changing conditions
